Swimming Carnivals Update

Junior Swimming Carnival (Prep-year 2)

The Junior Primary Swimming Carnival will be held next Thursday morning, 7th September, with events commencing at 9.15am. Students will come to school as usual and will walk over to the pool with their class teachers at 9.00am. The year 3/4 and 5/6 classes will attend as spectators and parents and friends are very welcome to attend and cheer on the students.

The Prep-year 2 students will participate in three events.

Prep: Kick and blow bubbles with noodles; Backstroke with noodles and Noodle horse race.

Year 1/2: Kickboard race; Backstroke race and Dolphin race.

Following the races, students will have an ice-cream. They will then return to school for the rest of the day, finishing at the usual time of 3.00pm.

Senior School Swimming Carnival (Years 3–10)

The Senior Swimming Carnival will also be held on Thursday 7th September. It will commence at 4pm and should end around 6pm. Students are required to be at the LSSC pool at 3.45pm for a prompt start at 4.00pm. Thursday is a normal school day - there will be no early finish. Students finish at 3.00pm before going to the pool at 3.45pm. For any out-of-town students who need to remain after school at 3pm, supervision will be provided by LIS staff at the school. These students will then be walked over to the pool to arrive at 3.45pm.

Year 3-10 students will be taking part in various events such as – freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke; however, depending on their swimming skill level, some students might not participate in all events for their year level.

Students will be given an ice cream at the end of the swimming carnival.

Parents are welcome to attend and cheer on the students and we ask that you sit in the nominated area. If Prep-year 2 students attend the twilight carnival, they are to sit with their team either in the Muruks or Kumuls area.

Please note: a program for the Senior Carnival will be sent home next week, once finalised.

For both the morning and twilight carnivals, the toddler pool will be closed. At the conclusion of the twilight carnival, the pool will be closed.

Age champions, Good Sports Awards and the winning house for the Senior Carnival will be announced at Friday's assembly.

Please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher if you have any questions.

Kind regards,

Ms Savitas (Junior Carnival Coordinator) & Mrs Laien (Senior Carnival Coordinator)

VIP Champion!

From the Deputy Principal (STM)

This week I went to Lae with Janet Tambarie and Sebulon Ragi from HR Learning and Talent to present our programs at the PNG Chamber of Mines and Petroleum CANCONEX Conference. The conference included over 800 participants from mining, landowners and government with Prime Minister James Marape opening the conference. My presentation spoke about the School to Mine including Lihir International School and the 10 Programs of School to Mine. Seb and Janet spoke about the LTTC, and the Learning and Talent Workforce Development Programs. Our presentation was very well received with plenty of feedback commending the great work we are doing in Lihir.

This week is Week 5 in our Work Ready Program, and our trainees are progressing well. This week we welcomed Lovelyn Teaku to speak to our trainees about Newsafe.

We are continuing preparation for our DWU Lecturers to come to site to deliver the Bachelor of Primary Education Upgrade and the Master of Educational Leadership during the September school holidays.

National exam remedial lessons at STMC and after school remedial lessons are continuing for Grade 8 and 10 students. These lessons are of great importance as the students prepare for their exams at the start of term 4.

Our FODE students continue to work hard as they prepare for the end of year exams.

Regards,

Mr Kevin Collins
