Principal’s Message

Education Week 2023

Happy Education Week everyone! This year we celebrate 175 years of public education in NSW. At Dudley Public School we are incredibly proud of the high quality educational standards we have and the culture and value within our school community in public education. Our daily Facebook posts this week are an acknowledgement and celebration of the various domains of public education that we serve each and every day for students, staff, families and the wider school community. We encourage parents and carers to have daily conversations with your child about school life and the importance of being a resilient, life long learner.

Success and Celebration

We are incredibly lucky here at Dudley PS to have a dedicated group of teachers who go above and beyond to ensure every students individual potential is realised and nurtured. Recently we have had a range of extra curricular programs, events and activities that have provided students with an opportunity to shine outside of the regular classroom expectations. Over the last few weeks students have actively and proudly participated in Zone Athletics Carnival, Hunter Dance Festival, Premier’s Debating Challenge, School Concert Band and Book Week. We continue to strive to provide an extensive and varied program of extra curricular opportunities for all students in creating opportunities to succeed, thrive and grow.

SKY HIGH - The Musical

We are very excited to be hosting the school production 'SKY HIGH - The Musical' at the end of this term. This performance will involve staff, students and the community coming together to work on a musical show including dancing, singing and acting. This project will create an opportunity for students to achieve the syllabus outcomes in creative and practical arts, which will be the focus subject during Term 3, in addition to our non-negotiables of literacy and numeracy teaching. We encourage families to immerse themselves in the excitement of the production and share this memorable experience with your child.

Tickets went on sale yesterday and are available for purchase at https://www.trybooking.com/CKCST

Tell Them From Me

Our Year 4, 5 and 6 students recently completed the Tell them from Me Survey. This survey gathers valuable information to provide the school with an indication of student voice in areas involving academics, extra curricular activities, wellbeing and culture. Some finding included:

- Year 5 & 6 have a strong sense of belonging to the school.

- All students have a high level of positive relationships (School average = 92%, NSW average = 85%).

- Year 5 students indicated high levels of motivation to do well in their learning.

- 91% of Aboriginal students feel good about their culture.

- 91% of all students have a sense of pride in Dudley PS.

- 66% of students feel good about transitioning to high school.

Following these results I will be meeting with small groups of students across the Years 4-6 classes to explore the ‘why’ behind the data and get a deeper insight into student voice.

Read-a-thon

The P&C Read-a-thon has begun with a fantastic response from the community. We have 67 students who have already registered and have raised over $6000!!! This fundraiser is a great initiative to get our students reading books and will also assist with students completing the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge at the same time. 1/2W are currently our highest fundraising class. There are a range of prizes for the highest fundraising students and class, as well as some encouragement prizes for students along the way to keep the team spirit going. Reading Logs are optional to keep, however at the end of the challenge there will be a prize draw for students who have completed 20 minutes of reading every day of the read-a-thon.

Community Communication Update

Starting from the end of Term 3 we are moving to a new system for payments and electronic/digital permission notes. This platform will then take over all systems operations from the start of 2024. The platform is called schoolbytes and will provide a much better system for digital notes and payments for parents.

Staff will be undergoing training in the coming weeks/months on the new system which will streamline processes for parents and office staff.

We will continue to use skoolbag/audiri for the remainder of 2023 for communicating with the community about events and activities. We will also use sentral parent portal for reporting, attendance and calendar correspondence too.

Attendance

During Term 2 we had 70% of students attend school on an average of 90% of the time or higher. 40 students actually attended every school day of Term 2! This term we would like to improve both figures by having each student attend school at every possible school day (except for when they are not well). Please remember to provide an explanation to the school in a timely manner if your child is away from school.

NAPLAN Results

Year 3 and 5 students sat the NAPLAN tests at the beginning of the year and we expect the reports to parents to be sent home very soon. We have been lucky enough to see some preliminary whole-school data and we are very pleased with the results of all the students involved.

The standards are set at a challenging but reasonable expectation of what students know and can do at the time of testing. There are 4 proficiency levels:

Exceeding: the student’s result exceeds expectations at the time of testing.

Strong: the student’s result meets challenging but reasonable expectations at the time of testing.

Developing: the student’s result indicates that they are working towards expectations at the time of testing.

Needs additional support: the student’s result indicates that they are not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected at the time of testing. They are likely to need additional support to progress satisfactorily.

Rubbish Dumping

We have a had a recent issue of domestic rubbish dumping around our skip bins. Our skip bins remain locked every afternoon, however some members of our community are dumping their household hard rubbish around the area where our bins are. If you are around the school in the afternoons or over the weekends, can you please keep a vigilant eye out for any dumping actions and notify the school or school security unit on 1300 880 021. The removal of this rubbish has incurred the school additional waste collection costs and this has impacted our school budgeting. Many thanks for your support on this matter.

Kind Regards

Peer Support Term 3

Our peer support program has continued to be a huge success at Dudley Public School during Term 2. Our Year 5 & 6 student leaders have demonstrated exceptional dedication and passion in guiding their peers through various tasks. We couldn't be more proud of the active participation shown by all students involved in each of the 32 groups. As we move through Term 3, students will engage in learning activities that will address the topics listed below. Together, we aim to foster an inclusive learning community where every student feels valued and supported.

Week 1 - Catastrophising & Keeping Things in Perspective

Week 3 - What is bullying and cyberbullying?

Week 5 - Bullying causes great harm.

Week 7 - Bullying is not okay in our school and is everyone's business.

Week 9 - Put downs are not okay in our school.

Book Week

I would like to thank all our families for their support at our book week celebrations. It was wonderful to see so many smiling faces enjoying the parade. The children looked fabulous in their costumes and their joy as they danced with their classes said it all! The book fair was our most successful one yet, every purchase earns rewards for our school and your contributions were most appreciated. All reorders were processed on Wednesday last week and we should receive them here at school very soon. Thank you for your patience.

Premiers Reading Challenge

With just over two weeks to go the PRC is almost over! Friday August 18th is the last day for updating online reading logs so keep reading and recording those books! Don't forget, whatever you read to raise money for the Read-A-Thon can be recorded in your PRC log too so make the most of this opportunity to complete the PRC and raise money for your school at the same time!

I will complete reading logs at school for students in K - 2.
