Principal's Updates

Open Day – Book Fair – Book Character Parade

Last Tuesday we proudly celebrated Public Education Week by inviting parents and families into our classrooms for an engaging assembly led by our fantastic band who performed beautifully for everyone.  Our assembly continued with a fun and well dressed book character parade. Then we invited all of our guests into classrooms where students took the lead, guiding their families through meaningful discussions about a variety of work samples they had prepared. This provided an excellent opportunity for parents to gain insight into their children’s learning experiences and achievements. The atmosphere was vibrant and filled with excitement, as it was heartwarming to see so many parents actively participating and connecting with both their children and the school community during this special event. Well done to our students, staff and families for making this a special celebration. Thank you to all our families who also supported the Book Fair which was a great success.

Regional Spelling Bee

Good luck to Bruce and Charlie who will both be representing our school next Wednesday at the Regional Spelling Bee! They have both been practising hard and we wish them all the very best.

Attendance

Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can negatively impact your child’s learning and wellbeing. Research highlights a clear correlation between student attendance and the achievement of quality academic, socio-economic and health outcomes. This research tells us that students with an attendance rate below 90% are educationally at risk. Above 95% is our expected attendance rate.

Assistant Principal Updates

Strengthening Maths Skills through Explicit Teaching and the Daily Review

This year, our students in Years K to 6 have been engaged in mathematics with a strong emphasis on explicit teaching, following the guidance from the NSW Department of Education. Our teachers are breaking down complex concepts into simple steps, demonstrating strategies, and providing support to help every student understand the material.

A key part of our approach is the daily review. These brief sessions focus on reinforcing important number skills through engaging activities, helping students build fluency and confidence in their skills. This regular practice allows them to strengthen their understanding of mathematics.

We are also pleased to use the EAST Maths units, which are designed to support explicit instruction. These lessons include clear learning goals, examples, and opportunities for students to practice on their own.

We follow the gradual release of responsibility model:

  • I do: The teacher models exactly what to do and how to do it.

  • We do: The teacher and students practise together, step by step.

  • You do: Students try on their own, with support if they need it.

This means your child is never left guessing about what they’re learning or how to approach a task. They hear it, see it, practise it, and get feedback all in the same lesson.

We are excited to see the positive impact these teaching strategies are having on our students’ learning and interest in mathematics this year!

Great Aussie Bush Camp Update – Kincumber

We are excited to share that preparations are well underway for the upcoming Great Aussie Bush Camp at Kincumber! Students are already starting to get excited about the adventure ahead.

Next week, we will be sending home a medication form that must be completed and returned prior to camp. Along with this, you will receive the gear checklist again to help you prepare everything your child will need.

We are currently finalising the full agenda and activities for the camp. So far, some of the fun experiences planned include archery, cooking traditional damper, and canoeing. Additional activities are still being confirmed and will be shared soon.

At school, we will be going through the camp guidelines with students to ensure everyone understands the expectations and stays safe during the trip.

Thank you for your support as we get ready for what promises to be a memorable and enjoyable experience for all!

The Great Aussie Bush Camp gear list

The gear list is attached to this newsletter for your reference and will be sent out again next week along with the medication and food allergy forms. Please remember to complete and return these forms before camp to help us ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all students. Thank you for your cooperation!

Community Hub

Community Hub News

Hi everyone,

We’re excited to share that Hub has partnered with The Huddle for the very first time to launch weekly Tuesday morning programs designed to get our community moving.

Our first two sessions featured a workout circuit, and the feedback from the women who joined has been amazing!

Coming up, we’ll be mixing things up with activities like yoga, walking football, and other fun, free sessions. Best of all, they’re child-friendly, so feel free to bring the kids along. Interested in joining us?

Recently, Elsa Paulose from Uniting and Nicole Hughes from Benevolent hosted an information session on the NDIS and Carer’s Gateway programs. If you have concerns about your child’s development, or if you’re a carer feeling stressed or overwhelmed, remember—you’re not alone. Support is available to help you.

We’re excited to launch a certified barista course for our wonderful canteen volunteers, starting August 16 and running for six weeks. Even better—while the course is underway, a coffee van will be on school grounds each week. Drop by between 10:00 am and 11:30 am to grab a cuppa and say hello! If you’d like to join the course, contact Seetha to be added to the waitlist.

And don’t forget—our Father’s Day celebrations are set for the afternoon of September 2. Save the date! We’ll share more details in the next newsletter.

Mihikaa is also offering free, individualised art therapy sessions—no artistic experience needed! These sessions provide a safe space to express yourself, explore difficult emotions, and build self-esteem. Speak to Seetha to book your spot.

For those I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting yet, I’m Seetha, your Community Liaison Officer here at the Community Hub. I’m around the school on Mondays to Wednesdays and Fridays, and I’d love to connect with you.

The Hub is a friendly, welcoming space where parents can meet, chat, and build connections—with each other, the school, and local services. We run a range of regular and special activities that are open to everyone, no matter your background.

So, pop in for a coffee, join an activity, or just say hello—I’m always happy to have a chat. If you’d like to learn more or find out how to get involved, call me on 0448 331 588 or email seetha.srinivasan@det.nsw.edu.au.
