A FEW WORDS FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Families

We have had a very busy and productive term of learning and fun at Hallett Cove East PS. It is hard to believe we are at the end of term one already! Our staff have been busy with some high-quality professional learning which we wanted to share with you.

Professional Development – Student Free Day

Last week at our student free day, staff participated in training on crisis prevention and de-escalation. This training links really strongly with our focus on developing effective learners with the skills and capabilities to thrive academically, socially and emotionally. The training is an important step in ensuring our school environment is a safe and supportive one for everyone and that our staff is equipped with skills to recognise early warning signs of escalating behaviour and effectively manage potentially challenging situations as they develop. The training was very practical as staff had a go at techniques to de-escalate challenging situations and thereby preventing conflicts from escalating. By implementing the crisis prevention training, we aim to enhance whole school safety and promote a positive culture, ultimately contributing to a harmonious and productive learning environment.

Professional Development – Thinking Maths

One of the key professional development initiatives we have embraced as a school is 'Thinking Maths.' A number of our staff are undertaking Mathematics professional learning offsite, through the department’s Orbis facility and then sharing their learning with all staff through staff and team meetings. Thinking Maths is designed to deepen teachers' understanding of high-quality teaching and learning of mathematical concepts and enhance teachers' ability to foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills in students. We are committed to supporting professional growth of our staff by ensuring that they are equipped with evidence-based pedagogical approaches and resources to enable our students to learn, grow and thrive mathematically.

As this is the last newsletter before school holidays, I would like to take the opportunity to wish everybody a safe and happy holiday break. We look forward to seeing everyone back at school, ready for term 2.

With regards

Matthew Chapman

Principal

A FEW WORDS FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Dear HCEPS school community,

In a wonderful initiative to promote effective learning and student agency, our reception students from 7E recently visited Karrara Preschool to explore a nature play area designed by the preschool's own students. This visit provided an inspiring opportunity for our young learners to engage with their peers and witness the impact of creativity and collaboration in a natural setting.

The nature play area at Karrara Preschool is a remarkable example of student agency in action. Designed by the students themselves, it features natural elements like logs that encourage exploration and play. Our reception students were excited to experience this imaginative space, which fosters a connection with the environment and promotes outdoor learning.

During the visit, our students connected with the mid-year reception cohort at Karrara, engaging in activities that fostered effective learning. It highlighted the importance of community collaboration and the endless possibilities that arise when young minds are given the freedom to explore and create in nature.

We look forward to more such enriching experiences that not only broaden our students' horizons but also strengthen their capacity as effective learners and active participants in their educational journey.

As we approach the end of the term 2 I would like to wish everyone a safe holiday break.

Kind regards,

Robyn Physick

Deputy Principal
