This Term in Year 4/5 during HASS, we have been learning about rules and laws, why laws and rules are important and how they affect the lives of people. We have learnt about the roles of local government and how members of the community use and contribute to local services.
We were lucky enough to have Nungarin Shire President, Pippa de Lacy come in and share her knowledge and expertise with us. Pippa spoke about her role as the Shire President and what she does to improve the community and town of Nungarin.
Kaylee Jacobson:
When Pippa came in to explain the levels of government, she told us what she does and what level of government she is. Pippa is in the local government and controls Nungarin. She makes decisions for the town of Nungarin about what new things to get or change. Something that I didn’t know that she told us was that the Gavel has never been used in a meeting before and that in the election process she got voted 6 years in a row.
River O’Meagher:
When Pippa came into our class we learned about the levels of government. She told us all about what she does at the Nungarin Shire. Some things she told us about was what she has to do to keep the roads and gardens clean and safe, the health and safety and the Heritage. She told us a lot more, but they were my favourite. It was really fun learning about the levels of government with Pippa. I also really enjoyed learning about the Gavel. Thank you for coming to St Mary’s school Pippa.
Georgia Caldwell:
Pippa talked about how she is the Nungarin Shire President, and this is what I learnt from her:
BUILDINGS
The team helps build new buildings and asks people if they don’t like something or if something needs changing. If something is ruined or even if the building is destroyed they help fix it.
WASTE AND RECYCLE ♻️
Pippa and her team of assistants help pick up the pieces of rubbish from the floor and the bush that is dumped. They look after the plants and the garden. They have cameras at the tip!
ROADS
They look after the gravel roads and town roads and keep them maintained.
Sienna Anderson:
Pippa came into our class, and she talked about her job as Nungarin Shire President.
Every two years there is an election, four people from the shire council votes and it is a lot of work. She does a lot of paperwork and reading. If you would like to build a shed, you must get your building plan approved. They look after the roads and gardens, to make sure they are up to scratch. Her favourite thing to do is talk to the town and help the community.
Thank you Pippa, for your time and effort visiting our class. We wish you all the best in this year’s election process and hope it is a successful year for you!
