Cyber Safety

Last week all students in grades 3-6 attended a Cyber Safety seminar as part of the Growing Up Online community-wide event, presented by Susan McLean – Australia’s foremost expert on cyber safety and a former member of Victoria Police.

This was organised by the SayIT initiative — a whole-of-community response to the growing challenges of cyberbullying and digital harm in our region. SayIT brings together all seven Mansfield schools, the Council, Victoria Police, MACE, Bendigo Bank, WiNE Network, MASS, and local sporting clubs — united to foster safer, more respectful online behaviors across our community.  This initiative began in late 2024, following growing concern from educators and mental health professionals about the harmful impacts of online abuse on our young people, families, and community wellbeing. SayIT is about turning concern into collective action.

The session provided students with important and age-appropriate information about staying safe online. Topics included:

  • Rules and laws around online behaviour
  • Cyberbullying and its impact
  • The risks of online ‘friends’
  • Common sites and apps children are using (and their age requirements)
  • Practical ways to stay safe online

The students all completed a worksheet during the session that they were to take home and go over with parents and carers. Please reach out to your child’s classroom teacher if you have not yet seen one.

We encourage these conversations to continue in the home, workplace and the community and hope to welcome Susan back to Mansfield Primary School in the coming years.
