From the Principal

As Term 1 comes to an end, I would like to thank the students, staff and community of Telopea Public School for a fantastic start to 2025 and for your ongoing support of our school. Today's Easter Hat Parade, with so many visitors to our school and so many happy, smiling faces, was indicative of the wonderful community spirit we have built together. This term we have had outstanding student attendance, improved academic learning, improved behaviour and almost all students wearing our school uniform with pride. Congratulations and enjoy a well-earned term break! Teachers return to school on Monday 28th April for two school development days. Students return to school for Term 2 on Wednesday 30th April.

Staff News

Today we have farewelled a much-loved member of our staff at Telopea Public School. Mrs Ashika Nand has relieved in the position of Senior Psychologist, Education for a period of three years. She has provided invaluable support to the counselling team across our network of 13 schools as well as to the staff and community of Telopea. We wish her all the best in her new role next term.

Community News

I would like to personally thank the P&C for their ongoing support of our school. They are a small, but dedicated group of parents who work tirelessly to support our school community and to improve the school experience for all. On Wednesday this week, they organised a lovely hot cross bun treat day which was very well received by our students. We have a small group of parents who regularly volunteer their time, working quietly behind the scenes to ensure these special events can happen for your children.

On Saturday 3rd May, the P&C will host a fundraising event at our school to coincide with the polling for the Federal Election. They are calling for volunteers from the wider school community to support them in making this a success. I urge all parents, carers and community members to consider giving up an hour or two of time on this day to come along and help. All funds raised will go towards resources for your children. Please email telopeapspandc@gmail.com if you are able to help.

Week 10 - Year 5 Echidnas

Congratulations also to the children who won a yummy prize today in our Week 11 attendance challenge raffle.

Behaviour Expectations

Recorder Group

Our recorder group are working hard and making great progress! They delivered a very impressive performance at our whole school assembly last week and again today at the Easter Hat Parade. Well done students and Mrs Bicanic!

This month we have been cooking up a storm! All classes have been treated to another cooking class with Isha from Fresh for Kids. As always, we made another delicious and healthy dish to taste. The recipe was a capsicum salsa which included the ingredients of capsicum (red and yellow), cucumber, tomato, red onion, coriander, lime juice and olive oil. Our favourite way to eat the refreshing salsa was with the crackers because it gave an extra crunchy texture to the dish. Everyone really enjoyed cooking again this year!

Some classes also made pumpkin soup with Mrs Andonenas with pumpkins and zucchini harvested from our garden. It was the tastiest soup we’ve ever tried!

The midyim berries (Austromyrtus duclis) in our garden are ready for harvesting. These blueberry-looking berries are bush tucker and taste like eucalyptus. A lovely sweet treat to enjoy in the Autumn time. Kindergarten learned a little about this bush food, harvested and tasted their own berries and then recorded what the bush and berries look like in their journals.

Year 5 has also been learning how to make recycled paper and saved a lot of paper from going to landfill. Although the process was long, we had lots of fun making the pulp, using the moulds and learning how recycled paper is made on a larger scale.

Library News

It has been an exciting time in the Library during Term 1. We have read books about Chinese New Year, Ramadan and Easter celebrations. Our theme has been “At Telopea Public School we celebrate all cultures”. Children have loved the stories we have read and gained an understanding of each other’s beliefs.

Please remember each child needs to bring a library bag each week and return their books so that they can borrow again. We have a very good selection of popular books!!

Our library timetable is:

Wednesday

Year 1, 6 and 3/4 Kookaburras

Thursday

Year K, 2, 5 and 3/4 Wombats

What's Happening Year 2 Bandicoots

Things are getting ‘spacey’ in Year 2.

As part of our Science unit – ‘Earth and Space’, students have been researching and discovering the wonders of our Earth, our solar system and beyond. Students have chosen a planet that they would like to investigate further. They created artworks of their chosen planet and over the following weeks will use their research and computer skills to create an information report on their planet that they will present to the class.

ANZAC Day Ceremony

Yesterday, Telopea Public School held our annual Anzac Day Ceremony. Anzac Day commemorates veterans and service personnel who served in world wars, peacekeeping missions and recent conflicts. Thank you to our school leaders for conducting this important ceremony for our school and to Yechan K. from Year 6 for laying the wreath on behalf of our school community.

Easter Hat Parade

We had a special visit from the Easter Bunny at school today! Our K-2 students & playgroup friends performed beautifully at the Easter Hat Parade, showing off their beautiful hats and some impressive singing and dancing skills. Thank you to all the parents, carers and visitors who came along to join us at this lovely event and for staying on to picnic on this beautiful Autumn Day. Thank you also to Mrs Moutzuoris & Mrs Bicanic for organising this fun event.

Important Reminders

COLLECTING STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL

A reminder that if you have made arrangements for someone to collect your child/ren that is outside of your normal arrangements, please ensure that you have notified the office so we are aware and can let other staff members know in a timely manner.  This applies to leaving early and for the end of the day.

SAFETY

A reminder to all students and parents that entry to the School is via the Pedestrian gate on Chestnut Ave located near Block D. This is for everyone's safety. If you require disabled access there are two entry points into the school via the ramp into the school office and via the gate on the corner of Sturt and Manson Streets.

NOTES SENT HOME

On occasion important notes will be sent home. Please ensure you remember to check your child's bag each day.

CELEBRATIONS

Here at TPS we enjoy celebrating student’s birthdays. You are most welcome to bring in something to celebrate but we ask that individual store bought small bite size cupcakes or individually wrapped sweets are brought in to school as this makes it easier for the students to eat. A large cake makes it difficult to distribute to their classmates.

LOST PROPERTY

There are a number of items in the Lost Property box which do not have names on them. If your child is missing an item, please check this box which is located in the D Block breezeway.

CONTACT INFORMATION OR CIRCUMSTANCE CHANGE

Please ensure that your contact details are up to date. It is important that the School be able to contact you in case of your child being ill, a child not being collected from school or in case of emergency etc. If your family circumstances change, please also provide the school with any updated documentation.

You can notify the school of any changes or updates via written confirmation or complete the template form located in the office foyer.

MOBILE PHONES OR DEVICES

If you require your child to carry a mobile phone/device, you will be required to complete a permission note (please see the school office if you require this note). Student mobile phones/device are to be turned off and handed to the school office during school hours in the morning. Mobile phones/devices will be returned to the students at the end of each day.

Schools as a Community Centre

Dear Telopea PS and SaCC Communities,

Hi TPS and Telopea SaCC communities. Recently Mrs Dooley was invited to attend a Carlingford Lions Club meeting to showcase Telopea Public School and invited me to join her. Mrs Dooley's presentation was inspirational. I'm certain attendees were thrilled to hear our school is thriving in so many directions. I was pleased to share information relating to the SaCC Project and how it is able to support the school, our students and wider community. Thank you Mrs Dooley for the opportunity.

SaCC initiatives also continue to thrive with children birth to five years attending Sing Rhyme and Story Time, Baby Play and Connect and Supported Playgroup. The Friday Playgroupers in particular loved joining the K-2 Easter Hat parade today. This was especially exciting for students in K-2 who had younger siblings joining them for a school event. Such a lovely way to celebrate family, community and connections. Thank you for the invitation TPS....we were there with bells on....No actually there with Easter Hats on!!!

Some news from the wider community...

Thursday 10th April (Thursday Week 11) the SaCC Project is supporting and will be attending the Active Parramatta Youth Event in Sturt Park. The FREE event will include games activities, Free sausage sizzle and drinks. I will have picnic mats set up with resources to make friendship bands. Please see the information flyer for details....Hope to see you at Sturt Park.

Wishing you all a safe and fun Autumn vacation time and I look forward to sharing holiday news when we return for Term 2.
