Principal’s Report

Mrs Chant

Welcome to Week 4 of Term 4. Time is sure flying this year!

This is my last newsletter for the year as I am taking Long Service Leave in the last 4 weeks of the school term. Ms Nikki Gauld will be acting Principal in my absence.

In the coming weeks we begin planning around 2024 classes and with fluctuating numbers that impact our structures, our school will not be in a position to publicise details of 2024 until closer to the end of the term.

Our staff have a great deal of knowledge of all of our students, and spend a great deal of time placing students with the right teacher, balancing academic and social needs, as well as considering any requirements for students with disabilities and other diverse learning needs. Composite classes that may be formed are not streamed and will have a diverse mix of all learners. Our teachers are trained to teach across all year levels including composite classes. I have a great deal of confidence in all of my teachers, and know that all parents and students should be extremely comfortable knowing we have such a dedicated and capable group of teachers at our school. I ask that you trust that we are able to make these decisions and that your students will be well catered for at our school.

Class lists will be available for all parents from Monday 15th January via the front office. We are open from 8:00 – 4:00 from this date. We then will have an open morning on Friday 19th January from 9:00am – 9:50am. This is where you will meet your new teacher and drop off school books. There will be a number of special circumstances that are considered for students with disability in regard to knowing which teacher your child will have. If your family is applicable, our HOSES, Nicole Inder, will be in touch before the end of the term.

I am happy to receive requests for placement of children relating to social or family needs (i.e. not being in the same class as family members or strong friendships that can actually hamper learning) but will not be considering any requests by parents for a certain teacher. Please note, that while we will seriously consider your requests in this area we may not be able to honour everyone’s wishes. Please submit these requests directly to me in writing to the front office or via email at achan224@eq.edu.au no later than Friday 10th November. Requests after this date will not influence decision making.

Class structures will be released in communication with parents in Week 10 which will include the teachers on those classes, however, are subject to change as we adjust to fluctuating enrolments over the Christmas holidays.

If you know you are leaving our school at the end of the year, we appreciate you notifying the office as soon as possible. Equally, if you know of families that would like to enrol with us, please encourage them to make contact at their earliest convenience. We are able to accept out of catchment enrolments for the beginning of the new school year in most circumstances. If you have any concerns about your child transitioning into the new year level, please speak to your class teacher in the first instance. They will then be able to feed this back to the school team when the teaching team are forming the 2024 classes.

As we transition our current Preps into Year 1 you may find that your Prep Teacher Aide has been changed. This is usual practice across our school. We make these decisions for a variety of decisions and does not reflect on any staff and their ability to complete a role in a particular room. We are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful, dedicated and highly skilled Teacher Aide team that your child will work with across their schooling. You will also see our Preps beginning to play in the Year 1-6 play areas in the coming weeks. This is coordinated by our Prep teaching team and if you have any questions about this, your teacher is very happy to help. 2024 Prep transitions have commenced with our next day being held on Tuesday 31st October from 9:30 – 10:30 in the Prep C classroom. Parents/carers must remain at school during these sessions. Our parent information night will be held on Thursday 23rd November from 5:30 in R Block which is easily accessed via Eaglesfield Street.

If you are a parent of a student in Year 6, it is time to enrol in your chosen high school. If this is a problem for you, please let your class teacher know immediately. We have already begun the transition process for our Year 6’s to set them up for success.  Private school transitions can look different to state schools, so it is the parents responsibility to find out how this will look.

Year 6 graduation and awards night will be held on Thursday 30th November from 6:00 in our school Hall. All students in Year 6 are required to attend this important event wearing their full school uniform, not senior shirt.

Road Safety

Members of the public report parent vehicles speeding in Eaglesfield Street at pick up and drop off times. It should go without saying, however, when you speed you endanger the lives of all students at our school, particularly because there is not a Main Roads student crossing on this street. Students must cross the street with an adult at all times.

Behaviour

At this time of the year, unfortunately it is common for behaviour to escalate across the school. This PBL cycle we are focusing on ‘Tuckshop manners’ and then next cycle we loop back to ‘hands and feet to ourself’. Physical aggression is not tolerated at our school. This can be provoked or unprovoked and each incident is thoroughly investigated by the leadership team. We have a vast arrangement of supports in place for students that require them to regulate their behaviour and all students are taught and encouraged to solve problems with their words and/or report the incident to a staff member. If the student feels like the staff member has not solved the problem, they are very welcome to also report their concern to the office. We need to know when an incident occurs asap so that a thorough investigation can take place. Thank you for helping us with this.

Tuckshop Day

On Friday 3rd November our school will celebrate ‘Tuckshop Day’ where we acknowledge and show our appreciation for Laura Whitby and her team of volunteers that show up each week and provide this amazing service to our students. I would like to send a big personal thanks to the P&C and the Tuckshop team. You are incredibly valued in our school and while we will be celebrating you on Friday, we are so thankful for the work you do each and every week.

Day for Daniel

On the 26th October we will welcome Logan Police to speak to all year levels in the lead up to Day for Daniel. On the following day, Friday 27th October, our school will be acknowledging Day for Daniel and students are asked to wear something red for the day while following all sun safe requirements. There is no gold coin donation for this event.

On Friday 27th October, it is also World Teachers Day. A big thanks to our teaching team for all the hard work they put in to make Beaudesert State School such a wonderful school!

On Tuesday 31st October we will be holding a lunch time Halloween disco for all students. Prep – 2 will be held in first break and Year 3-6 at second break. Students can opt in or out of the disco and all other play areas will be open. Students are welcome to dress up on this day, however, face paint, hair colour and masks are not permitted. In the past these items have terrified younger students and we run this as a fun day, not one some students fear. Thanks for understanding.

Attendance

Our whole school attendance continues to be a big focus as we go through Term 4 and we take attendance very seriously. We understand that children get sick and we appreciate you advising the office when this is so, however, an alarming number of students have unexplained absences or repeated absences which will affect their long term success in school. When in Year 6 this also impacts their eligibility to attend the Year 6 social.

Did you Know?

End of year concert

Our end of year concert is scheduled for Tuesday 5th December and will be held at the Beaudesert State High School Hall. At our end of year concert, each year level will perform their selected Christmas carol alongside other school performances. The doors will open at 5:00pm with the concert commencing at 6:00pm. The concert is also a major fundraiser for our P&C where we sell tickets for our annual P&C Christmas raffle. Families are most welcome to donate items to the raffle which could include; chocolates, alcohol, gift cards or items or vouchers from a family business. We would love them to be in the office by Monday 13th November. Thank you for your support. Every item counts to making this the best Christmas raffle we’ve seen!

As we near the end of the year our Business Manager, Sandy Currie, is contacting families to ensure all debts are paid for 2023. Please note, families with bad debts will not be eligible for future incursions and excursions until the amount is paid in full. Also, if you require a refund, please let Sandy know.

A reminder to parents that primary school aged students should not have access to social media sites. We have had multiple reports of inappropriate student behaviour on social media off school grounds. In this event, parents report behaviour, including online bullying, to the police in the first instance. Students do not have access to social media sites using school technology.

At the end of this year, we farewell staff who are either retiring or resigning from the Department of Education. Our retiring staff include Lynne Magarry, Anne Barry, Lola Brose, Jo Mentiplay and Marian Hansen. Chris McIntyre has decided to resign from his position at our school.  Melissa Ainsworth and Neika Cooper continue to be on maternity leave into the new school year. Charmaine Jeffrey will be extended in her teaching Principal position in Western QLD and we are awaiting further advice on the return of Tanya Conway, Ben Costello and Sarah Smith.

Next year we welcome two new permanent teaching staff members from Canungra State School – Kimberley Pendreigh and Georgia Schuurmans-Stekhoven.

I wish all our families a safe and happy Christmas break. I look forward to seeing you all again after the school holidays. If you have any questions or concerns while I am absent, please direct these to Nikki Gauld on ngaul4@eq.edu.au

Junior School Classroom Reports

Prep

Our Prep children have slipped right back into the school routine. We have been very busy reading, writing and working on our number knowledge. We are all extremely excited about going swimming this term. We would like to thank the Lions Club of Beaudesert for generously providing the Prep students with their very own swim shirt. Please remember:

Items to be brought weekly: ALL CLOTHING ITEMS MUST BE LABELLED

  • A bag suitable for wet togs and towels
  • Swimming togs
  • Sun Shirt (student MUST have a sun shirt to be eligible to swim)
  • Towel
  • Underpants
  • School shoes and socks (thongs to wear to the pool)

All of us are very focussed on the term ahead as we get ready for Year 1!!

Year 1

This term, Year 1 students have been very excited to attend swimming lessons. All students have enjoyed going on the bus and learning how to swim. In English, we have started learning about procedures. In class we have been looking at recipe books and seeing what different command verbs we can find. We have enjoyed looking at different procedures that we use in everyday lives. In Maths, we have started the term looking at addition and subtraction. The students have been able to show multiple ways to answer addition or subtraction sum. In Science, we have started to investigate different light and sound sources. Students have been exploring different things around us that make loud and soft sounds.

1/2C

This Term 1/2C are enjoying reading George's Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl.  Students this term in English are learning about procedural texts and how to write clear instructions for someone else to follow.  Students will be using some of the ideas from George's Marvellous Medicine to help them with creating their own procedure later in the term.  In Math students have been learning about how to give and follow directions on a map.  We are also consolidating our understanding of number concepts and working on a range of addition and subtraction problems.  Year 2 will be starting to look at multiplication over the next few weeks as well.  Students were very excited to see that our seeds that we planted in science last week have started to sprout.  Students are having fun in Art learning about warm and cool colours and how to use colour, line and texture to create their own art pieces.

Year 2

Recently Year 2 enjoyed an excursion to the Ipswich Railway Museum. It was a very hands on and engaging way to investigate technologies of the past and present.

In the classroom Year 2 continues to be busy, busy, busy as we head into our final term.

As the weather has heated up, swimming lessons have been a much enjoyed experience this term. Soon enough it will be time to work on our end of year Christmas carol, looking back it seems like the year has flown by.

Lost Property

As always, we have a mountain of lost property piling up at school. A lot of it is unnamed which makes it extremely hard to get it returned to the rightful owner. If your student has lost any items direct them to the lost property bins which are located under A Block Administration Building, or you're welcome to pop in for a look yourselves. Please check there if your children are missing any of their belongings.

PLEASE MAKE SURE ALL BELONGINGS ARE CLEARLY LABELLED!

Chappy Corner

We won! Did you see our HOPE cooking biscuits in the Beaudesert Show? We won first prize!! Our Year 5 & 6 students have been doing some amazing cooking. So far this term we have been baking meatballs, brownies, zucchini slice and choc chip biscuits. We have also been able to help another couple of families. Our HOPE cooking is so good, helping the students to learn to cook and read and follow a recipe, along with how to take turns and work together. All of this, topped off with the chance for them to learn the joy of giving and doing something for someone else. I am so thankful for the opportunity to support our students and families through our HOPE cooking.

Another aspect of my role that I am really thankful for is our Kindness Project. This week I had the joy of giving our local Police officers some amazing pictures and cards to say thank you for all they do. I love the way through the kindness challenges we are able to reach out into our community and thank people who care for us. This week’s challenge is to thank our amazing teachers. We are very blessed here at Beauy with wonderful teachers who really care about their students. Friday is world teacher’s day and such a great chance for us to say thank you. Some of our other challenges are to thank our tuckshop ladies, clean up our desk area and donate to a Christmas appeal. It is always so exciting hearing the stories of how our students are being kind. Thank you for encouraging your children to be kind to others. It makes such a difference!

Please don’t forget that parents are welcome to come up on a Wednesday after drop off for a coffee and chat. Parenting can be hard at times and it is always nice to have a community around you who can encourage and provide support. We also have the HOPE shop open for you to browse and find a bargain with items just $1. All proceeds go directly to supporting chaplaincy programs here at our school. The HOPE shop is usually open on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, or you can pop in of an afternoon and if I am there, you are welcome to come and have a look.

As we get closer to the end of the year would you please consider donating your second-hand uniforms so that we can help families? You can drop clean and washed uniforms up to the Chappy room any Tues, Wed or Thurs. Thank you.

Our year is quickly coming to an end but please don’t hesitate to let me know if I can help in any way. It is such a privilege to be your school chappy and I am so thankful for your support.

Sports Update

The senior swimming carnival (ages born 2011-2014) will be held Thursday 16th November 2023 at the Beaudesert Pool. Students will arrive normal time at school, have their name marked off the roll, then BSS staff will walk the students down to the pool.

The day will consist of two different levels of races:

1)      Championship Races: 50 metre races of breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and butterfly (these races are for students aiming for Age Champion and for house points);

2)      Participation Races: 25 metre races of breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle (these races are just for house points).

To enter the championship races, your child must see Mr. Brimelow in person by Wednesday 25th October. If your child does not nominate themselves by this date, they will only be allowed to swim in the participation races. Students cannot be in both a championship race and a participation race for the same event. To enter the participation races, you listen for the announcer’s instructions on the day.

CONGRATULATIONS

In other news, we would love to congratulate Paige for her stunning efforts in her long jump. Paige came in at 6th place for the STATE. What an accomplishment! Paige puts in an amazing amount of effort to her sport and her results definitely show how dedicated and talented she is. We can't wait to see what she accomplishes next year.

If you have any celebrations that you wish to share with me, please email me on eabri0@eq.edu.au

Cheers,

Ed Brimelow

Congratulations Paige

Digital Technologies

In the digital era, it's essential for our students to understand the foundations of technology, and in the Digital Technologies class, we've been busy exploring the fascinating world of data and coding. Here's a glimpse into what our students have been up to.

Preps Dive into Data:

Our Prep students have embarked on an exciting journey into the world of data. Understanding data is an essential life skill in this information-driven age, and our little ones are off to a great start. They've been learning how to collect, organise, and represent data using digital tools.

From recording their classes favourite lollies to counting fruits, they've been diligently collecting data and representing it with the help of interactive and engaging activities. By embracing digital technologies, our Preps are laying the groundwork for future data scientists and analysts.

Year 1 and 2: Navigating with Beebots:

In Year 1 and 2, the students have been delving into the world of maps and coding with the lovable Beebots. These pint-sized robots are perfect for introducing the principles of programming and problem-solving.

Our students first created maps using some of their favourite things. They then took on the role of programmers, using basic coding principles to guide their Beebots through these digital landscapes. It's incredible to witness how their understanding of sequencing and direction has evolved through these activities.

The journey of learning and exploration wouldn't be complete without documentation. Year 1 and 2 students have been using Seesaw to capture their progress through photos and videos. By doing so, they not only showcase their accomplishments but also develop essential skills in digital communication and presentation.

Japanese

Welcome back to Term 4!  I have just enjoyed the September school holidays in Japan, as a part of   the Department of Education QLD, Global Opportunities – Full Immersion Teacher Program.  I spent 2 weeks in a Japanese highschool, in a place called Saitama, which is one hour north of Tokyo, to learn how the Japanese education system operates. It is a full immersion program where only Japanese is spoken outside of the English classroom.  Japanese students learn English from Prep to Year 12 and have amazing writing and reading skills.  They really value the chance to practise speaking in a real-life context with native speakers. It was a lot of fun sharing with them about QLD and Beaudesert, in particular.  I was able to upskill my Japanese language speaking and take lots of authentic photos to share with our students.  I brought home some yummy and unusual treats for them to try as well.  I am looking forward to further enriching the Japanese program at Beaudesert State School.  I would love to hear the stories of any of our families who have been to Japan!
