Lihir International School and School to Mine Campus

Principal: Mr Kevin Collins

Deputy Principal LIS: Ms Catherine Langusch

Deputy Principal STM: Mr David Wengip

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Welcome back to Term 2 at LIS and thank you to our parents and carers for all their support and encouragement during Term 1.

This term is shaping up to be full of exciting activities including after school activities or tee ball for the Primary School and Science experiments for the High School; Athletics in PE and our Athletics Carnival in Week 9; and the Grade 7 / 8 Camp to Cairns in Week 7 and 8.

Term 2 Calendar

Term 2 will be a busy time of learning at our school and the term two calendar can be downloaded below. Other important dates will be brought to your attention as they arise.

Parent Overviews

Teachers will send home Term Overviews today to give you an idea of the learning your child will be involved in this term.

Media Consent Forms

There are many photo opportunities at our school and student images are often used in publications, such as the Toksave, and displayed online through the school website and also used by Newmont in promotional; stories and material. As such we will be sending a Media Consent form home with all students so parents have the opportunity to provide or not provide consent for use of photos either through STM / LIS or in wider Newmont publications and media. Please complete and return.

Parents and Wantoks

The Parents and Wantoks first meeting for the term will be held next week Tuesday at 6.00pm. The Parents and Wantoks Committee add a great deal of value to our school and this is a fantastic opportunity for families to become involved in contributing to school events throughout the year.  All parents, community members, and others who are interested to join the P&W are encouraged to attend.

School Council

The School Council Meeting for Term 2 will be held on Thursday, 15 May; this meeting is for all School Council Members.  If you would like to know more about the functions of the School Council, please make an appointment to see the principal.

Independence Day Preparation

STM staff have formed a committee to begin planning and preparing for the PNG’s 50th Anniversary Independence Day Celebration, which will take place in Term 3. A parent meeting to discuss plans for this special event will be held next week. Please keep an eye out in the toksave for more information from either Mrs Lorna Romaso-Daimol or Ms Pat Yip.

ANZAC Day

This morning our Grade 9 and 10 students led the community ANZAC Day Ceremony. I was very proud of their sincerity in the way they conducted themselves and we have received many positive feedback commending their efforts. Thank you to all who attended and participated in this ceremony to mark a day that is not only important for Australia and New Zealand but also PNG.

Regards,

Mr Kevin Collins

We pay our respects on ANZAC Day.

From the Deputy Principal (LIS)

Welcome back to term 2! I hope everyone had a safe and happy Easter. The term has started well with lots of learning happening!

Wellbeing Matters!

This term, we continue our rollout of 'The Resilience Project' program across all classes from Prep to year 10. As part of our Wellbeing program, this term Mrs Amanda Amidy will be taking our year 7/8 and 9/10 classes for some mindfulness and meditation. The primary classes will have mindfulness sessions with Amanda in either term 3 or term 4. We thank Amanda for her enthusiasm and support of our students.

This term, we will also hold another Wellbeing afternoon and we thank the P & W for funding a healthy fruit snack for all students on that day to promote the benefits of healthy eating.

Term overviews

Term 2 overviews were sent home with students today. These overviews advise parents and carers about the learning that is taking place in classes this term. If you did not receive an overview, please contact your child's teacher.

Student folios

We ask that students folios are returned if they have not yet been bought back to school.

Friday assemblies

Each Friday, we hold a short assembly in the basketball court and parents and wantoks are welcome to attend. Today was the Student Council Induction Assembly and next week it will be the year 5/6 assembly. Friday assemblies commence at 8.10am.

Kind regards,

Ms Langusch.

Work Ready Program

Preparation for our Batch 2 WRP Trainees is well into the final stages. The program is scheduled to commence on Monday 28th of April with 20 confirmed Trainees. As usual, the program will run for 8 weeks.

A reminder again that towards the end of last year, we put a temporary stop to accepting new Work Ready Applications and this is still in effect. A Toksave will be sent out by mid-this year announcing when new WRP applications will be accepted.

 FODE

FODE program has commenced for this term and students are working at their own pace with guidance and assistance from STM staff.

Best wishes for this Team.

Kind regards,

Mr. David Wengip

Congratulations to our Work Ready graduates!
