Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 8 Newsletter - Friday 6 December 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

2025 School Planning Update

As we approach the end of the year, our planning for 2025 is well underway. This includes developing class structures, confirming staffing and refining our enrichment programs to ensure they best meet the needs of our students. Thank you to everyone who has provided input through surveys and discussions

  • Enrichment Programs

Next year, our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) Enrichment  program will operate K-6 as whole-class sessions, ensuring that every student has access to this valuable learning experience. These sessions will be team-taught by Mr Sutton and classroom teachers, one-hour per week across one semester (two terms), providing all classes with access to engaging, hands-on, innovative and collaborative activities that foster critical and creative thinking.

We are also excited to announce the trial of a new Creative and Practical Arts (CAPA) Enrichment Program in 2025. This program will follow a similar model to the STEAM program and operate in the alternate semester for all classes. Whole-class sessions led by Ms Suzanne Sole and classroom teachers. These sessions will give our students the opportunity to explore and develop their musical, drama and dance skills in a structured and engaging environment. Ms Sole will also be introducing a number of new extra-curricular and performance opportunities for our students with a recorder ensemble and ukulele group already in the works.

The school’s executive team conducted a thorough review of our school practice of forming enrichment classes for high-achieving students in Year 3/4 and 5/6. We carefully considered feedback from staff and families to ensure that the program continues to meet the diverse needs of our learners and aligns with the Department of Education’s priorities, including the High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) policy. Changes to the organisation of our enrichment classes are as follows,

  • We will continue to form enrichment classes in Year 3/4 and 5/6; however, they will be renamed Academic Enrichment Classes.
  • Selection criteria will be based on standardised, school-based and DoE test results, with English and mathematics weighted evenly. Counsellor and external assessment results (WISC, WIAT, IQ etc.) may also be considered by the school’s Exec. in special circumstances. This will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Students will be offered a place in these classes in Year 3 and remain in this cohort for four years. Except in extenuating circumstances, students will not be removed from the program once placed. This change will also apply to all students currently in an enrichment class.
  • The cohort will expand every year with additional students to be offered placements in Yr 4, 5 & 6 based on the selection criteria above.

To help facilitate explicit teaching and effective differentiation, particularly in mathematics, Year 3/4 will trial streamed mathematics classes next year, supported by our LaST. For four one-hour  sessions per week, students will be placed in streamed classes based on their results in mathematics assessments. These class groups will be regularly reviewed with changes made based on assessment data.

Our enrichment programs are closely aligned with the DoE's High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) Policy, which recognises that students can demonstrate high potential and giftedness across a range of areas, not just intellectual, including creative, social-emotional and physical domains. They are designed to foster creativity, collaboration and a love of learning, catering to different strengths and interests while promoting equity of access and opportunity for all students.

  • Class Structures

Projected student numbers suggest an enrolment of 430 students next year, only slightly down on 2024, with a healthy Kindy enrolment of 66 students. This will mean we will be able to maintain the current class structure next year (3x Kindy classes, 6x 1/2 classes, 5x 3/4 classes, 4x 5/6 classes).

Please note that students will not be advised of their specific class or teacher until the start of 2025. This approach will allow the school to make any necessary adjustments to class placements over the holiday period, ensuring that we can respond to changes such as new enrolments or student movements. We also aim to reduce any potential anxiety some students may feel over the break. Instead, students can enjoy their holidays without focusing on specific changes for next year. We want to ensure a positive and smooth start to the school year, as students meet their new teachers and classmates in a welcoming and supportive environment when they return. The plan is for all students to be in their new classes from Day 1 next year, Thursday 6th February.

Class of the Week - 1/2M

In 1/2M we have been working on a funky snowman and reindeer. We have been putting Christmas hats and ear muffs on them.

We decorated the funky animals and used sharpies to do patterns on them.

We also put them on green & red paper. 1/2M did lots of patterns on them including spirals and polka dots and all kinds of things.

We have enjoyed this and we will cherish it for ever more.

Our different ideas have pumped us up on the Christmas spirit! We have loved working on this project for Christmas.

We wrote stories about them and looked into our imagination while writing our story.

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Year 6 County Fair

Congratulations to our Year 6 students for their outstanding contribution to the school by hosting a fun and well organised County Fair this week. Every student contributed to the smooth running of the action packed fair and we were delighted to see the way the students engaged with the K-5 students.

County Fair is the culmination of the students' developing leadership skills this year and we were proud of the way they worked together to enable each team member to contribute to the success of County Fair. For the past 6 weeks, Year 6 students have worked towards this leadership opportunity by submitting a written proposal outlining their plans for each stall including the resources required and the anticipated expense. Students worked together and their hard work resulted in a successful fair for our students, teachers and families.

We are sincerely grateful for the support of our families leading up to and for assisting on Wednesday. In particular we would like to thank Angela Dosseter, Carl Modena, Lazaros Giannichronis, Justin Asciak and Emma O'Brien for their help on the day.The success of this leadership initiative is also due to the support of local businesses and we thank them for their strong support.

Thank you also to our Year 6 teachers Leah Pegler, Amanda Champion, Orla Page, Jacqui Hill and Elyse Mooney for their commitment to this student led activity and for the way they mentored students in the  weeks leading up to County Fair.

Inquisitive incursion

Drummoyne PS are one of the many schools that use the digital resource 'Inquisitive' to enhance our students learning. Inquisitive's aim is to inspire students to learn with open minds and purpose. To do this, they anchor on high impact strategies, such as explicit teaching, feedback, multiple exposures, collaboration and metacognition. The more high impact teaching strategies used effectively in lessons, the greater the learning outcomes for students.

I recently signed up to gain early access to Inquisitive’s brand-new Students feature! Four staff members from Inquisitve joined 5/6C on Tuesday to see their new student interface in action and ask the students for feedback to assist with the roll out for 2025.

Clean up DPS Day

On Thursday, 5th December, the Environmental Leaders of 2024 and upcoming 2025 Enviros put together a very successful Clean Up DPS Day for the whole school. The goal was to make our school a litter-free environment and normalise picking up rubbish in the playground.

The clean up started right after the recess bell. Everybody was ready to go with their tongs and gloves. Students went to a lot of effort to pick up even the smallest pieces of rubbish. Yr 6 students were outside the school perimeter and K-5 students were in various zones around the playgrounds. Students developed the knowledge of what goes in the recycling bin and what goes in the rubbish bin. We ended up collecting 7 bags of rubbish and it was a great success!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Year 6 Community Language lunches

Greek

Six years of learning Greek came to a vibrant conclusion with an unforgettable experience at Georgia's Koutouki, a Greek taverna in Leichhardt. This excursion wasn’t just about enjoying delicious Greek food; it was a chance to bring the classroom lessons to life and immerse the students in Greek culture.

The live music was one of the highlights as the students were introduced to the traditional Greek instruments – the bouzouki and the baglama. Some of the students were even drawn to the dance floor to join in on the Greek dances.

The day’s experience was not only about eating Greek food, but also about appreciating the rich traditions, music, and community that come with the Greek language.

Italian

Year 6 Italian students got a taste of Italy with their excursion to the well-known Leichhardt restaurant 'Cafe Gioia'. There, they were treated to pasta, pizza and a huge helping of gelato..buonissimi!  We rounded-off our lunch with an Italian trivia competition. Though we couldn't quite deliver the requested first prize of a Ferrari, the following students got the satisfaction of being in the winning teams tying against stiff competition: Sebastian K, Liam, Diaa in one team and Daniel, Xavi and Isaac O in the other.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Aydin D - 5/6O who performed in 4 shows across the weekend at the 41st anniversary of Schools Spec with over 5,700 other students. He was in the Combined Primary School Dance Ensemble item 'Somewhere Only We Know', the Boys Hip Hop Ensemble item 'Larger Than Life', and the Spec finale. He was also featured in the Schools Spectacular launch photo & banner.
