Rozelle Public School Newsletter

TERM TWO WEEK SIX

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Rozelle is a place where Aboriginal children learned, played and celebrated their culture for thousands of years on this beautiful, natural land. As we learn, play and celebrate together on this land, we honour the Wangal people of the Eora nation and pay our respects to elders both past, present and emerging.

The past fortnight has been very busy at Rozelle for staff and students. School photos were expertly coordinated by Sepfora and The School Photographer. It required 2 days to ensure all class, individual and sibling photographs were taken. The school expects photo packages to arrive in early Term Three.

Our Zone Cross Country Team competed in the Balmain PSSA Carnival at Jubilee Park and there were some outstanding individual performances. We are proud of the entire team and their effort, especially those students who have progressed to regionals. I would also like to acknowledge Mr Alden Kwok, who was the coordinator of this years’ Zone Carnival.

This week, the school acknowledged Reconciliation with an incursion from Koomurri. Students spent Monday engaging in activities and learning about Aboriginal culture and histories. It was wonderful for staff and students to begin the week with a smoking ceremony. As part of our acknowledgement, the whole school gathered in the hall for a very special performance by our choirs. Accompanied by Ms Christie and Mr Hartnett on guitar, our mass choir performed ‘From Little Things Big Thing Grow’. They performed beautifully and we hope to reprise the performance later in the year. Thank you to Mrs Horton who has led the organisation of this year’s Reconciliation events.

We have now tipped over into the second half of the term with teachers working on Semester One student achievement reports. These reports will be sent home with students on Tuesday 27 June.  Our Year Four will be off to Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Camp while Year 2 & 3 will participate in a two week swim school. We have students performing on the stage of the Sydney Opera House and competing at the Regional cross country championships. Fortunately there will be a long weekend to catch our breathe!

WINTER ILLNESS

Winter illnesses, including flu and COVID continue to circulate and impact staff and students. The past fortnight saw various year groups impacted including all our Year Three teachers. The school executive does its very best to maintain continuity of staff and we are well supported by a small number of regular casual teachers. However there may be a day where the class will need to be split. This is a last resort - and will not happen on a regular basis.

If your child is unwell, they should not attend school. This can help reduce the spread of colds, flu and other viruses. Should your child become unwell at school, the office will phone parents and you will be requested to come and collect them as soon as possible. Parents should still be informing the school should their child test positive for COVID.

ENERGY DRINKS AT SCHOOL

There have been a number of students bringing energy style drinks to school including the brand PRIME. These drinks are being purchased from local shops as students walk to and from school. Many parents may be unaware that their child is purchasing them. These drinks are not recommended for children under 15 and therefore, are not permitted to be drunk on school grounds. Your support of this is appreciated.

RECENT NEWS & ACTIVITIES

RECONCILIATION WEEK

KOOMURRI DAY

This week, Reconciliation is recognised by the school community with a range of activities. On Monday, at morning lines we had a welcome to country smoking ceremony and song performed by Koomurri. This was a spiritual event where we were welcomed to their land. Following this, students participated in a day of activities including:

  • Artefacts, weaponry, bush survival and history
  • Aboriginal Art and face painting
  • Boomerang Throwing
  • Didgeridoo and story telling
  • Aboriginal song and dance

RECONCILIATION WEEK ASSEMBLY

On Wednesday the school came together to acknowledge Aboriginal culture and histories and explore the importance of Reconciliation. Our combined choirs sang 'From Little Things, Big Things Grow'. Thank you to Miss Doyle, Miss Roberts, Mr Hartnett, Miss Christie and Ms Mac for devoting so many hours to choir practice and the singing was incredibly moving.

STAGE 3 INTERSCHOOL DEBATING CLUB SUCCESS!

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR STAGE 3 DEBATERS!!! We managed to win both the affirmative and negative debates vs Newtown PS on Tuesday. The topic was 'Advertising Fast Food Should Be Banned'. Our affirmative team was Almira Y (5 Honjo), Eloise R (5/6 Cotton), Mya A (6 Mombassa) and Mili M (5 Honjo) and our negative team was Billie K (5 Honjo), Ava P (5 Honjo) Charlotte T (6 Hart) and Davin C (5 Honjo). Our 3 'Ms' (Manner, Matter and Method) were well demonstrated, and I was extremely proud of the way our students represented Rozelle Public School. A special thank you to Oliver Misko for his outstanding leadership and the countless hours he dedicates to our Debating Club every week.

STAGE 3 GEOGRAPHY EXCURSION TO CALLAN PARK

On Tuesday, Stage 3 students and teachers walked to Callan Park to extend their learning outside the classroom. In class, students have been learning about how humans influence places and manage spaces in the environment. We used Callan Park as a case study and looked at structures within the park that are currently unused. Students were asked to select a space and think about how the structure could be repurposed to suit the needs of the community. It was fantastic to see how students thought creatively about the spaces and with their local community in mind.

ZONE CROSS COUNTRY

Well done to all students who competed at the Zone Cross Country on Wednesday 24 May. Rozelle did a fantastic job coming in 2nd overall. All students ran their best and made the school proud. Congratulations to Rosa B (3 Cromer), Scarlett S (4 Pwerle), Eleanor G (6 Mombassa), Lily G (6 Mombassa), Oscar E (3 Cromer), Hardy M (3 Cromer), Arthur S (3 Done), Nate A (4 Turrin) and Davin C (5 Honjo) who have all progressed through to the regional tournament. We look forward to hearing your results.

YEAR 4 SCIENCE

Year 4 have been studying food and fibre production for science this term. This week we were lucky enough to prepare and try some healthy recipes. Students made green smoothies, fruit skewers and banana yogurt pops. The green smoothies were a hit! Thank you to Woolworths Rozelle for donating the produce for the recipes today! Your support of the science program was much appreciated.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Helping out at school is a great way to get involved in your child’s education as well as get to know the staff and other parents and carers.

You can help by:

  • listening to children read in the classroom
  • volunteering on sports days
  • helping supervise excursions
  • getting involved in fundraising activities
  • joining school committees.

Parent volunteers are not required to have a Working With Children's Number, however they are required to fill in a 'Declaration for Child-Related Workers' Form, as well as provide 100 points of ID to be photocopied at the school office (including either a passport OR birth certificate, along with drivers license OR Medicare / bank card.

THE SCHOOL CANTEEN
The School Canteen operates as an order-only service five days per week. All orders are made online through Spriggy Schools app and delivered to the school in time for students to enjoy at lunchtime and recess. Orders need to be placed by 7:30am on the day or can be placed weekly in advance. Families will need to download the Spriggy Schools app and create a profile for their child. If you need assistance visit spriggyschools.com.au.

NUDE FOOD TUESDAYS
Nude Food Tuesdays are back! On these days, students are encouraged to bring lunch and recess that are not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging. Please be mindful of packaging that is put into lunch boxes each day to minimise any rubbish that needs throwing away. Instead, opt for reusable containers for packaging food. Each Tuesday, class nude food lunchboxes will be tallied so please help the Green Team with this great initiative to reduce the waste/rubbish in our school.

NUT AWARE
A number of students at Rozelle have been diagnosed with a life-threatening allergy to nuts. While it is not advised for the school to declare itself “nut-free” we are definitely a “nut-aware” school. This means that we ask parents/carers to carefully consider the food they provide for their child and avoid foods that contain nuts. Before sending in food for special occasions for your child’s class, please check with the teacher. The school appreciates everyone’s effort in keeping all our students safe and supporting their families to manage this difficult situation.

MORNING DROP OFF
Families are reminded that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am unless they are attending OSH Club or a before school activity such as band rehearsal. There may be occasions where you need to drop your child off 10 minutes earlier. In these instances, students must go to the middle playground, where they sit and wait for teacher supervision to begin.

LOST PROPERTY
When parents are up at the school they may have seen the lost property trolley which is located inside the building entry from the Darling Street playground. Should your child misplace a hat, jumper, water bottle or lunchbox…you may find it in the trolley.
