Lambton Public School

Term 3 Wk 4 - Monday 12 August 2024 Newsletter

Principal's Message

What a week! It has been so lovely celebrating and recognising all the things we are proud of here at Lambton Public School. Thank you to our families who were able to attend our character parade on Tuesday, those who bought tickets to support the 5/6 drama group at the Hunter Drama Festival at HSPA and parents and carers who have transported students to the Zone athletics at Glendale on Friday. Thanks to the teachers who have made these opportunities possible.

Next week, 12 to 16 August, for the first time, the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence (or NDA) has expanded into a week-long initiative, now known as Bullying No Way – National Week of Action.

Bullying No Way Week is a commitment being made by thousands of schools and supporters across the country. It provides an opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to bullying prevention. It gives us an opportunity to connect with students, staff and school communities to implement workable solutions to prevent bullying.

The new hero colour for the campaign is purple – symbolising peace, strength and empowerment to take a stand against bullying behaviour.

The theme for this year's campaign is Everyone belongs. This theme highlights the importance of creating a sense of belonging and inclusion for students. We recognise bullying often thrives in environments where individuals feel marginalised or excluded, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every student feels valued and respected.

“Positive school climates that value diversity and inclusion can foster a sense of belonging and provide a protective factor against negative peer relationships and reduce bullying.” (Australian Education Research Organisation 2023).

For more information about Bullying No Way Week and bullying prevention, visit the Bullying No Way website.

We encourage parents and carers to take this opportunity to have open and honest conversations with their children about the impact of bullying and what they can do if they need support. You can visit the Bullying No Way website for tips around how to have this discussion.

You can access the school’s bullying prevention policy on the Lambton Public School website to learn more about our process for preventing and responding to bullying.

Ear Health Talk  for Early Stage 1 and Stage 1
Did you know that it only takes 5 drops of nasal mucus to fill a child’s middle ear cavity and cause infection, pain and reduced hearing? Middle ear infection (Otitis Media) is common in younger children and though it will usually go away on its own with only pain management, we can help lower the incidence by establishing good ear health practices. This is very important, especially during the cold and flu season, as repeated infection can cause permanent hearing loss.

The Department of Education Newcastle Hearing Team provides student education on the importance of hearing, healthy ear habits plus effective nose blowing, nose breathing and coughing all of which are beneficial in helping prevent Otitis Media. Next week Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 students will participate in this free workshop run by a Specialist Hearing Teacher who will visit your child’s class.

On completion, students will receive a certificate with information on what parents can do to help maintain their child’s good ear health; signs and symptoms that indicate they may need a hearing check as well as contact details for booking a hearing assessment. Also, students will receive a pack of tissues with a smelly sticker to encourage them to monitor the need for nose blowing. If you suspect your child is having ear or hearing difficulties, please let their teacher know and see your GP.

Next School Assembly
Our next school Assembly will be held on Thursday 22 August (Week 5) and will be led by Class K/6S. The Senior Choir will also be performing at this assembly. Parents, carers and families welcome to join us from 2:00 pm.

Book & Education Week 2024

We had a wonderful day last Tuesday 6th August, celebrating the value of books with our community and the quality teaching and learning that occurs at Lambton Public School.

The children and LPS staff had a fabulous time and appreciated your involvement. If you were unable to visit the school, we hope you were able to participate through the excitement of your children and their retelling of the day.

Thank you to all the parents and families who supported the day by assisting with your child’s book character costume, purchasing books from the book fair, ordering a special lunch, participating in the open classrooms or attending the book character parade.

Scholastic Fairs supplied our book fair again this year and the children really enjoyed the experience and excitement of having a book shop in our library.

As a percentage of books sold, LPS was able to purchase $1,511 worth of books for our library from Scholastic Fairs. An increase of $400 from last year! All those books will be available for students to borrow this term. Your continued support of this valuable event and fundraiser for our school is greatly appreciated.

LPS Wellbeing Strategy - Grow Your Mind

As part of our LPS K-6 Wellbeing strategy, a new program has been selected to be implemented in Term 3 across the school. Grow Your Mind is a program that was trialled in several classrooms earlier this year and is now to be implemented across the school. Here is some information about how Grow Your Mind can support students at LPS.

Have you heard your child talk about a guard dog, the sifting sooty, a sensitive octopus, an elephant who tried to remember and a wise owl? you may be wondering what on earth this is all about?

Each animal represents a key part of the brain and now that we are a Grow Your Mind school, you can expect to hear more about it.

At our school. we believe that education is about academic achievement AND about developing well-rounded individuals who can navigate the complexities of life. We know that when children have the skills of resilience, emotional regulation and perspective, they will do better socially, academically and physically. With the Grow Your Mind program, we aim to provide our students with the tools and resources they need to thrive in all areas of their lives.

Why the animals? Why the brain? And why Grow Your Mind?

The animils are a playful and engaging way to teach children about their brain and some of the core functions. Linking social and emotional wellbeing habits to the brain provides purpose and sparks a child's interest in topics that may otherwise cause a yawn or eye roll! Eg gratitude, excercise, healthy friendships, and growth mindset are just a few examples. We chose this particular program for 4 core reasons:

1. All of the content within the platform is linked to both the NSW and Australian curriculum.

2. The program has been independently reviewed by the Univeristy of Wollongong with results showing positive gains in psychological and physical wellbeing as well as a greater sense of connection and belonging.

3. Grow Your Mind provides a detailed learning continuum so that students are exposed to different topics and learning activities in each year group.

4. Grow Your Mind provides a whole school approach to wellbeing. This means your mental health matters too.- as does ours as a staff. The program provides accessible information we can pass on to parents and carers. Including their free, award winning podcast that we hope you make the most of at home and in the car.

How will Grow Your Mind work at our school?

We will be running explicit lessons as part of our PDH/PE curriculum and we will be grabbing 5 minutes of wellbeing throughout the day in a way that is reflective and responsive to the needs of the students. This may look like a mindful breathing excercise, a plan to be kind, listening to one of the Grow Your Mind songs. challenging unhelpful thoughts, practicing positive affirmation, being of benefit and picking up rubbish around the school or classroom. As a staff we will receive on demand training for staff wellbeing and implementing the program.

We are confident that the Grow Your Mind program will have a positive impact on our students, staff and community. We look forward to working together with you to support and develop your child's social and emotional skills in an engaging and playful way.

If you have any questions please speak to Mrs Gillard or your child's classroom teacher.
