Drummoyne Public School

Term 3 Week 2 Newsletter - Friday 2 August 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Green and Gold Day
Today students and staff were decked out in their favourite green & gold to support the Australian Olympic Team. The day is about painting the country in our national colours and being proud of Australia’s sporting achievements. It’s about all Australians coming together and celebrating the green and gold. It was great to see the excitement and pride in our school community.

Education Week
Education Week is when we celebrate and acknowledge all those who contribute to our children and young people’s educational journey. School staff, parents and carers, community leaders and P&C associations all play an important role in our students' education.
This year’s theme is: Proud to belong. Public Education Week is a time for all of us to feel “proud to belong”, sharing our pride in being part of NSW public education and the achievements of our students and staff.
We will begin our celebrations with our Open Day on Monday. All parents, caregivers and families are invited to attend on Monday for our special assembly in the hall commencing at 9.30am. This will be followed by open classrooms, book fair visits, a picnic lunch and cake stall. Other activities such as an interschool debate, ZingActiv gymnastics lessons and our Art Trail to coincide with our new mural unveiling are planned.
Please refer to the flyer for additional details. We look forward to seeing you.

Regards,

Dianne Colb  AT(L)

Deputy Principal

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Principal's Award's

Respect awards - Rawson says congratulations to:

  • Maddie L - 1/2D

Responsibility awards - Monty says congratulations to:

  • Elka C - 1/2A
  • Diana C - 1/2K

Positive Behaviours for Learning (PBL) tokens

Tokens are handed out to students who demonstrate our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Resilience. Students post the tokens in the collection tubes divided by house teams. The tokens are counted at the end of each week, and the ongoing totals are displayed on our school notice board outside the office.

Semester 2 SRC badges were presented at this week's assembly

THIS WEEK AT DPS

One Hundred Days of Kindergarten

This week kindergarten students have celebrated the milestone of 100 Days of learning. The move across to "big school" is a huge change in little people's lives and every kindy student has already learnt so much.

Jaxson says, "We have learnt to read and write the 'A' sound and the 'I' sound."

Ethan says, "I have learnt about the rainbow serpent."

Betty says, "I have made new friends."

Bertie says, "I love painting and doing news with KN"

Kira says, "I like playing with my friends"

Zia says, " I have loved maths, art and getting a values award"

Raelynn says “My favourite is Art when we get to use colours and cut it out.”

Finn G says “I like the teachers”

James says “Library, playtime, lunch and recess orders”

The kindergarten teachers are so proud of the growth each child has made as they develop new social and learning skills. We look forward to the next 100 days of working alongside these curious and enthusiastic learners.

Festival of Choral Music Rehearsal

On Tuesday, the Stage 3 Choir Festival of Choral Music singers took part in their combined schools rehearsal at The Salvation Army Hall. It was a fantastic day of exciting music, breathtaking harmonies and lots of wonderful tips and tricks. Our choir did a fabulous job representing Drummoyne, participating whole-heartedly through the entire day by singing their well-rehearsed repertoire and respectfully engaging with the skilled conductors.

We are all extremely excited for final rehearsal and concert in two weeks, which will take place at the Sydney Opera House (Tuesday 13th August, Australis Concert).

Miss Xenos and Miss Cantlay would like to thank our singers for their ongoing dedication, responsibility and commitment, as well as their beautiful voices!

Congratulations

On Saturday the 27th of July, I went to UTS to compete with my team where we presented poetry in Chinese.

We came 2nd and we got to hold up the trophy!

We got to take a picture with someone holding the trophy in the middle.

It was an exciting and fun day!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Primary Lights for Learning Incursion - Volunteers needed on Wednesday 14th August

This immersive facilitated STEM learning experience starts with a compelling presentation where students will learn about extreme energy poverty - experienced by 789 million people around the world. They will explore the role of renewable energy in helping to combat the four pillars of disadvantage associated with energy poverty - education, health, environment, and economics.  Students will then assemble SolarBuddy lights, and finally make a connection with the recipients of the completed solar lights through writing a letter to accompany their gift.

Volunteers are needed on Wednesday 14 August  9.30am -11am (Stage 3) - AND/OR 12.20pm -1.50pm (Stage 2)

We are looking for 13 volunteers for each session. You could be assisting in a variety of activities during your volunteering session including:

  • Assisting students to assemble SolarBuddy lights – Use your problem solving skills, eye for detail and communication skills to assist students to ensure that the lights are assembled correctly, all the screws are there, the lights work and are ready to be sent to children globally.
  • Assisting with Letter writing – Everyone who assembles one of the SolarBuddy lights is asked to write a letter to the child receiving it. Letters are an integral and important part of our programs. For many, these letters are the first piece of formal communication that the children will have received outside of their community. They are cherished and read over and over.
There will be trained volunteers on hand to assist and there is no technical skillset required.

Please see the below flyer for more information or contact Ms Michelle O'Dowd on 9181 2636 or email: michelle.odowd@det.nsw.edu.au with your availability to volunteer.

Sincerely

Michelle O'Dowd

Assistant Principal and Environmental Coordinator

Premier’s Reading Challenge

Will you rise to meet the challenge?

EVERYTHING SPORTY

Paul Kelly Cup Regional Finals

14 Stage 3 boys were invited to the Regional AFL Gala Day. This was a pleasant surprise as we lost the grand final last term. We knew going in as the under dogs, it was going to be a tough day in the office.

Our first game against Lily Pilli PS was hard - we did come back and win the 2nd half, however lost the game by 3 points. We had a fantastic win against The Kings School and then lost to the future grand final winners, Mimosa PS.

I was really proud of the boys as they showed great teamwork and positivity throughout the day.

On another note, good luck to Isaac O who is representing NSW (yes, NSW!) in the National AFL competition in Geelong next week. We are all super proud and wish you luck.
