A message from Julie

Thank you all for your support of our Pupil Free Day on Friday November 24. During the day, staff will be looking closely at student data, working together on the teaching of reading and reflecting on the year so far. All the work we do on this day helps us to develop our school plan and priorities for 2024.

At our staff meeting earlier in the week, we began our class placement process. As you can imagine, this is a significant undertaking. Staff work closely together using the information they have gathered from students, the information provided by families and their own knowledge of the students to begin to form classes for next year. This is a lengthy process and is completed over several weeks. We are hoping to share this information with you in week 9, and your student’s class placement information for 2024 will be included on their end of year report. I snapped a couple of photos of the class placement process and they are included below.

As we head in to the final weeks of the term, we also begin to look forward to our end of year events. Our School Concert will be a highlight, and I am looking forward to saying hello and welcoming you to the school to celebrate with us. There is a sausage sizzle available on the night (pre-order), available from 5pm, with students needing to be in class at 5:45pm for a 6pm start. Please bring your own chair or picnic blanket to sit as a family and enjoy the concert. The students will sit with their classes for the duration of the concert. It is shaping up to be a lovely evening – we just need to hope for fabulous weather. The pre-order sausage sizzle information and concert flyer have been sent to families on Audiri.

Please keep an eye out on Audiri for the end of year information.

Premier’s Reading Challenge Reception

On Wednesday November 22, Dernancourt School, represented by students Mia and Liam, and staff, Julie and Sue, attended the Premier’s Reading Challenge Reception at the Adelaide Zoo.  Dernancourt School was invited due to our high rates of participation and reading success over many years.

It was an honour to watch Mia and Liam receive a special certificate and a gift of books for our library from the Premier and Minister for Education.  After the Reception had concluded, we had the opportunity to explore in the Zoo and visit with the animals.  This was enjoyed by all.

Thank you everyone for your participation in the Premier’s Reading Challenge in 2024.  Thanks also to Sue, our Librarian and Premier’s Reading Challenge Coordinator for the work she does encouraging reading at Dernancourt.

Our garden club helpers in Week 5 were Harriet J5, Liano J6, Paige P4, Chris P7 and Jackson P14. After a very hot day on Friday, it was important for us to water our newly planted vegetables in the garden beds. Our green thumbs this week also helped finish planting the last row of agapanthus in the butterfly garden.

Cricket Recap

Cricket Recap:  We walked out with our cricket whites, and we were all ready to go. We were all nervous but then Mr. Ryall cheered us up with a great speech. We watched the really long match with Henley vs Stella Maris Parish. Henley won the game by 2 overs. We drank our PowerAde mix and some water. We did the toss and we lost; they chose to bowl. Our openers Willem and Cameron went out to bat. Unfortunately, Cameron got out on a golden duck. Aaroosh went in and the partners set the tone. Willem got out on 24 runs and then Renesh came to the crease. Aaroosh retired with 27 runs. Renesh hit 2 sixes before retiring, so Aarav and Lucas came in. They had a fabulous partnership and they put the icing on the cake by helping our team finish with a total of 135 runs.

Then we came out to bowl. Aaroosh and Aarav opened the bowling followed by Renesh, Toby, Willem, Lucas, Divya, and Shanmukh. Cameron did an excellent job at keeping. We kept them down to 45 in the first 10 overs. They ended with 134 with a nail biting last over. In the last 2 balls they needed 2 runs to win 1 run to draw. With the 5th ball of the over Renesh bowled one of their players, and then the 6th ball of the over Renesh bowled the ball, and it went straight to Aarav. Aarav fielded it so well and then he ran towards the stump, and he knocked the bail off, and that’s it! Dernancourt Primary School are off it to the Grand Finals!

At the end of the match, we all sang Ziga Zaga.

Please support the school and NECAP by donating goods. Any non perishable food will be appreciated but especially Christmas goods such as Christmas cakes, mince pies, tinned hams, tinned fruit, long life custard, dried fruit or any other items that would help to create Christmas hampers.

These hampers are distributed to the less fortunate families in the North Eastern areas.
