NAIDOC Week 2023

NAIDOC Week is next week and the theme this year is 'For Our Elders!'. The theme is about how in every generation, our Elders have played, and continue to play, an important role and hold a prominent place in our communities and families. They are cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, nurtures, survivors, leaders, hard workers and our loved ones.

At Goulburn North Public School, we pay our respects to the Elders we've lost and to those who continue working for their communities across our Nations.

To commemorate this event all students will participate in a wonderful performance of 'Didjeribone' on Monday 26 June. The presenter, Tjupurru uses his quicky laid back style to enthrall his audience with his unique 'Didjeribone'. We will share images of this event on Facebook.

One Long Term!!!

It has been a huge term, especially in the sense of COVID making a huge impact in our school community this term. It has been an amazing achievement to reach the end of term 2! Let us hope that Term 3 brings with it a fresh sense of renewal for all. If you are traveling during the term 2 holiday period, please do so safely.

School will resume for students on Tuesday 18 July.

Fun Friday

The Final Friday is almost upon us! Friday 30 June is our last day and as it has been a very challenging term for all, we would like to finish our term with 'Fun Friday'.

This day will celebrate 4M's of fun - Students will participate in;

M: Me time - They can bring an activity from home to share with their friends. Please not that all items brought in are the responsibility of each child. We also do not recommend bringing in activities will many small parts.

M: Mufti - Students may come to school out of uniform.

M: Munchies - Classes will participate in some class parties to celebrate 1/2 a year of learning completed. Our Northern Delights student store will also be open on this day.

M: Movies/Movement and Making - Each class will operate a special activity in the final session of the day. Students can opt into going to the activity of their choice in the final session of the day.

It will be a great way to finish off a huge term of learning!!

Mulwaree High School Orientation Date Change

Mulwaree High School have postponed their Year 7 Orientation Day to just after the school holiday period. The new date for this event is Thursday 27 July. This is in the second week of term in term 3.

Goulburn Council - Tree Planting

Goulburn Mulwaree Council have decided they would like to provide some greening to the area. This will involve locations across Goulburn receiving a native tree to plant. Our school will be planting a Flowering Gum somewhere on our grounds on Monday 31 July. This event will take place during our morning session, more details will follow early term 3. We will capture this on film to commemorate this event.

Education Week 2023!!

Term 3 Week 3 marks Education Week once again. The theme for this year is 175 Years of Public Education in NSW!! We are so proud of the school and its achievements. We will share details of this years event when it gets a little closer!!

Volunteer and help us improve Reading across the school

Our amazing friends at "Reading Friends Australia" are commencing a volunteer reading program after the school holidays in Term 3. This will involve members of the community coming into school to listen to some of our students read.

If you are interested in being involved with this program, our students will end up becoming better readers. If you can donate as little as an hour a week to sit and listen to some student read, we are happy for the support this will bring our students.

Please contact the office and we will connect you with our team of volunteers.

Curriculum and Instruction

We have recently received a generous donation of books from Harper Collins Publishers to top up our classroom libraries. We are conscious of our students' reading habits and not only want to teach them the mechanics of how to read and engage with texts but also want to encourage an enjoyment for reading. In a busy world, it is easy not to make reading a priority and pause to spend some uninterrupted time sharing a book with your child. Here are some ideas to help you on your reading journey with your child.

* Make time to read together every day (even 15 minutes is better than not at all).

* Read together in a place without distractions like the tv, computers or phones.

For younger children:

* Explain how books 'work'. Explain that books have a title, an author, how to turn the pages & reading words from left to right.

* Point out letters in words and talk about their sounds.

* Include books with rhyme or alliteration (repeated initial sound) and with an interesting variety of words to develop vocabulary. Talk about the meaning of new words and use them in conversation.

* Include some of the classics and texts from a variety of cultures.

For older children:

* Choose books for shared reading that use new words, ideas, themes and concepts that will broaden their vocabulary and general knowledge.

* Read a combination of modern and classic texts.

* Encourage children to be more adventurous in their own book choices, especially at the library.

* Don't insist on finishing a book if they don't enjoy the first couple of chapters. Put it aside as they may come back to it later.

Wellbeing and Wellness

Wellbeing Update

NORTHERN STAR AWARDS

Week 9 may see the very first Silver Certificates being handed out at our assembly. Close to half of the school has already received their Bronze Certificates. This is an amazing effort from our students. They can receive Northern Stars in their passports for appropriate behaviour in class and on the playground, showing initiative, being kind and considerate, all of the expectations that fall under our values of Respect, Responsibility and Cooperation. Keep shining bright everyone!

GNPS WELLBEING FORTNIGHTLY FOCUS

  • We use our manners

Our focus for week 9 and 10 is 'We use our manners'. Students will revisit lessons about using a kind voice and being polite when interacting with others. Families can help reinforce this focus at home as well.

Winter Holiday Ideas

The Department of Education has a range of holiday ideas on their website,

Topics include but not limited to:

Have fun at the zoo

Offline activities

Keeping active

Audiobook and Podcasts

Tech Talk

Cyber Security

Lose passwords and start Passphrasing.

Passphrases are harder to guess but easy to remember.

Some examples I have used in the past are the seasons, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. That way the month I'm in gives me more chance of remembering what passphrase to use. Phrases like SummerHeat@23WaterSlide, AutumLeaves23#GroundCover, WinterSnow#22HeavyFall. You can personalize these phrases to be more meaningful to you and therefore easier to remember. Remember to always include a mix of capitals, numbers and symbols and always be safe online.

School Track Athletics Carnival

On Friday the 9th of June the whole school went to Hudson Park for the annual Athletics Track Event Carnival. The weather was very chilly, but it still tuned out to be a fantastic day.

All students were sitting in their house groups underneath their new house gazebo's.

Through out the day students participated in all track events as well as long jump. Infants came till 12:30pm where they had  some fun novelty activities to participate in.

From 12pm our wonderful P&C and put on a lunch meal deal and it was delicious!

I want to thank the P&C for booking a coffee van and putting on a wonderful meal deal and canteen on the day. All the students, teacher and parents definitely enjoyed it.

I want to thank all the teachers and SLSO's for their support on the day. It wouldn't have been possible without the dedicated of the staff at Goulburn North Public School.

District Athletics will be in Week 2 of Term 3, Friday the 28th of July. Notes will be handed out to students on the first Tuesday back, the 18th of July.

Goulburn North Debaters

This year Goulburn North is competing in the Premier's Debating Challenge. The challenge provides students with the opportunity to participate in the art of debating, as well as compete against local schools.

This year we created two Stage 3 teams, team Aurora and team Galileo. There are four round in the competition and our students have competed in 2.

Our first round was against Goulburn South PUblic School, both our teams went against both their teams on topics about education. Unfortunately we did not come away with a win, but we did come away with a lot more skills.

Our second round was against Crookwell Public School, both our teams went against both their teams on topics to do with media. Our teams really refined the skills they learnt from our first round debate and as a result, both our teams came away with the win.

Round 3 will be occurring in Week 10 against Collector Public School and Goulburn East with our final round being held in early Term 3 where our teams will be competing against each other.

The students have really enjoyed being apart of debating, learning and refining their speaking skills.

Wonder Recycling

Recycle, Earn & Play

Well done to all students, staff and families. We have been able to fill all four boxes!

They are now sent off and we look forward to seeing what we have achieved through our recycling efforts.

3/4B News

Monday 5th June was World Environment Day. 3/4B watched a Power Point presentation on plastics. They found out that plastic is a synthetic material that has been created by humans. Plastic is popular because it is cheap to make and buy, it is durable and it can be reused. Some plastics, however can only be used once. This means that the creation of single-use plastics is a huge waste of our natural resources and is harmful to our environment. Most of these single-use plastics are buried in underground landfill sites. Usually, waste will be broken down easily by small creatures, however, because of its durable nature, plastic cannot be eaten and will stay underground or in water for as long as 150 years. This plastic pollution causes great damage to the environment and can be dangerous to wildlife and animals. 3/4B completed activities and talked about the many ways we can do our bit, to help reduce this plastic pollution and protect our earth

Northern Lights Blue

The Northern Lights Program started this term and the Northern Lights Blue group have engaged in experiences which link to curriculum outcomes such as cooking and gardening programs. A range of students have explored the new space and have accessed differentiated literacy and numeracy tasks and are learning to set and reflect on personal goals. The learning space has both flexible and assigned seating for students and holds a focus on building a growth mindset and positive wellbeing. Students are excited to continue their experiences with new programs next term as Northern Lights develops.

5/6L News

Through out Term 1 & 2, 5/6L have been mastering their skills in creating narrative texts. We have been using a strategy called the 7 Steps of Writing. This strategy breaks up writing a narrative into 7 important steps that the students learn to master individually, then blend together.

5/6L have been consistent in their practices, learning new techniques to add to their writing to make it more interesting. Recently we have been focusing on Show Don't Tell. This steps is where the students use their descriptive language to describe what is happening rather then just telling the reader.

I am so proud of all the students progress so far this year!

Northern Lights Gold

This term has flown by in a whirlwind! Northern Lights Gold has seen a move into our new classroom which we are steadily making our own. Our art and craft is beginning to decorate our windows and the children are developing a sense of inclusion and sanctuary. We have a strong focus on Social and Emotion Learning in Gold incorporating play-based learning and team building activities. Each Friday we cook something new, developing life skills and while integrating Maths and Literacy. We understand how to follow a procedure and we are learning about different types of measurement. So far, the choc chip pancakes have been the favourite! Our mini unit on Space was a highlight for this term. Elliott was able to tell us many interesting facts about gas giants and distant planets. We had a fun time drawing our galaxies and making our space helmets. We even managed to land on Mars!

We have been fortunate to have Miss Bell with us for most of this term, we will be very sad to see her go. Miss Bell has been working in KR and Gold, she has developed a wonderful relationship with all of the students and engaged them in many fun, innovative learning experiences. The children have taken a keen interest in teaching her how to kick the ball high and how to properly photobomb!

Northern Lights Gold- Having too much fun!

2C News

2C have been reading Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems as an introduction to persuasive texts. We discussed persuasive arguments and identified the use of persuasive techniques in the book including begging, getting angry, providing reasoning, offering a bribe and reverse psychology. We also discussed the use of font, colour and images including the use of speech bubbles and lines to show movement. Then we examined the drawing techniques and how Pigeon’s size, body language and expressions can make us feel sorry for Pigeon. Students then used mime to copy Pigeon’s body language, gestures, and facial expressions. The students are thoroughly enjoying reading and exploring this book, we have written sentences that either agree or do not agree with Pigeon driving the bus and provided reasons to support our argument. We then did a directed drawing and drew our own Pigeon.

Fraction Work

3/4L have been working hard to understand and work with fractions. They have learnt that fractions are equal parts of a whole and this can be shown in different ways. Students used their knowledge to identify and put together the word name, picture and number version of 24 different fractions. It took a while but they didn't an outstanding job! We have begun looking at equivalent fractions and now understand that equivalent fractions are fractions of the same value but with different denominators. Its wonderful to listen to the children use the correct mathematical language when working through these activities.

TERM 2 #FANTABULOUS

This term we have changed teachers, changed rooms and welcomed two new students into our class.  We have learnt about human rights, space, growth and fixed mindset and nutrition. We have connected over making raffia bracelets, building lego and music. We have played place value battleship and read together during reading groups. We have had a previous "Northie" come and conduct a soccer clinic with us. It has been a fully loaded term. The class will need the holidays to recuperate so we can do it all again in Term 3.
