Drummoyne Public School

Term 4 Week 1 Newsletter - Friday 18 October 2024

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Dear Drummoyne PS Community,

Stage 1 Swim School

Welcome to Term 4! There’s much to be excited about this term and, to kick things off,  our Stage 1 students have been heading off to Ryde Aquatic Centre for swim school this week. I’ve seen first hand the benefits of the swim safety lessons at Ryde Aquatic Centre, from my time at a previous school, and I am pleased that our students have the opportunity to take part in the program. The indoor heated pool means lessons go ahead, no matter the weather, and the qualified instructors do a fantastic job making sure kids feel confident and are safe in the water, developing important swimming and water safety skills that they'll carry with them for life.

Morning Drop-off and Supervision

Staff have recently noticed that a large number of students are being dropped off / are arriving at school prior to 8:50am. In keeping with our school supervision policy, the school formally accepts students at 8:50am each day. We are NOT able to provide teacher supervision for students any earlier than half-an-hour before classes commence at 9:20am.

To ensure the safety of your child before school, we ask that you please ensure that your child/ren do not arrive at school prior to 8:50am unless they are enrolled in before-school care at Gowrie or are engaged in a before-school activity such as band practice. Thank you, in advance, for your cooperation.

Conflict in Europe & the Middle East

At our school we value the cultural diversity of our school community and promote respect and understanding of diverse perspectives and world views. With the recent escalation in conflict in the Middle East and ongoing conflict in Ukraine & Russia, I would like to reassure you that our school strives to provide a safe and supportive environment for students, staff and families from all backgrounds. Our thoughts are with any members of our community who may be impacted by these conflicts.

Please be assured that any discussions, topics or student behaviour matters which may arise in relation to the conflict will be handled fairly and with care by our teachers. We ask that you talk to your children at home about any concerns they may have at this time and remind them that our school is a safe space which promotes respect for all people. Please contact the school if you have any concerns so that we can work together to ensure that all our students feel safe and are well supported.

Regards,

John Nguyen

FROM THE DEPUTY'S DESK

Sick children

If your child is sick at school

If your child gets sick or injured at school, the school will contact you. If your child is ill, they will go to an area where they can lie down and be monitored. You will be called to come and collect your child if they are too sick to go back to the classroom. For this reason, it is important to keep your contact details up to date with the school, including an alternative contact – such as a relative or neighbour – who the school can call if you are unavailable.

If your child is sick at home

From time to time your child may get sick. If they display any of the following symptoms, they should stay at home and see a doctor:

  • a fever of 38°C or above
  • vomiting or diarrhoea
  • cough or respiratory symptoms
  • cold or flu symptoms
  • rashes of an unknown origin.

Class of the Week - KN

In Literacy, KN have been using the book 'Scary Night' to explore how colours and words can make readers feel. We created a 'scary' acrostic poem, using alliteration. We hope you aren't too scared to read them!

PBL AWARDS

Principal's Awards and Principal's Badges

Students receive values certificates from their teachers throughout the year for demonstrating our values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

Once a student receives 5 values certificates, they are able to trade them in at the school office for a Principal's Award.  The 5 values certificates can be a combination of the 3 school values and come from any year the student has been at DPS.

Once the student has received 3 Principal's Awards, they can bring them to the school office and choose their Principal's Badge from one of the 3 values.

Congratulations

Congratulations to Kayla C from 3/4R. Kayla has been cast in the lead role for the theatre performance "The Great Recital". The show is completely in Italian and will be held at the Italian Forum in Leichhardt on the 2nd and 3rd of November 2024.

If you would like to buy tickets or get more information please visit the link here: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/the-great-recital-tickets-1032286997197

It is a great opportunity for the kids who are learning Italian as it is a show with a lot of funny songs.

Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes

Last term, as part of our English unit on ‘perspective and context’, class 3/4W read ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’. Sadako was a brave and resilient young girl who embraced life during the aftermath of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima, Japan. Sadly, due to the effects of radiation caused by the atomic bomb, she became sick with leukemia. Luckily, however, Sadako learnt that if she can make a thousand paper cranes, she would be granted a wish - a wish to get better.

Although ‘Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes’ was a sad story, we were incredibly inspired by Sadako’s optimism and inner strength during times of adversity. We also loved learning more about Japanese culture and were intrigued by World War II history.

Inspired by Sadako, we learnt how to make origami lanterns. In Japanese culture, lanterns are a symbol of good luck and happiness. During the yearly Obon festival (a festival that commemorates and remembers deceased ancestors), families would hang paper lanterns in their homes to guide the spirits of their ancestors back to the afterlife.

While making our paper lanterns, we quickly learnt the importance of precise, clear and detailed instructions in order to successfully complete a task. After making our lanterns, we wrote a procedural text on how to make paper lanterns using imperative sentences, time connectives, adverbial phrases and bossy verbs. Here is an example:

How To Make A Paper Lantern Written by Ludo D

Materials:

  • Origami paper or square paper
Instructions:
  • Firstly, position the paper into a diamond so a point is facing towards you.
  • Next, pull the top of the paper towards you so it forms a triangle with a straight line at the top.
  • Then, rotate the triangle a quarter turn so that the point is facing to the right.
  • After that, fold the triangle in half and open the paper to the original position (diamond shaped).
  • Next, fold the top corner towards the center and repeat for all remaining tips.
  • Then, flip the paper over and flatten firmly. Position it like the shape of a diamond.
  • After that, fold the top and bottom corners into the center so it looks like a taco.
  • Next, flip the paper over and fold the left and right corners into the center, forming a square. Position it into a diamond shape.
  • Then, fold all four corners into the center again and carefully smooth creases out.
  • After that, flip the paper over into a diamond shape.
  • Finally, push out the top and bottom folds so they look like a tiny rectangle.
  • And that’s how you make a paper lantern!

    CHESS!!

Learn to be a chess champion! Coaching for students at Drummoyne Public School is held on Tuesdays from 11:15am to 12:15pm, starting on 15 October 2024.
