TERM 1 WEEK 5 - 26 FEBRUARY 2024

Deputy Principal

It’s been great to have our students back in classrooms and settling into the school year.  Having missed last week due to Covid, on return I've noticed a real difference in classrooms - with routines now firmly established and teaching and learning well and truly underway.

I am looking forward to a successful 2024 and am excited to work with you to make this a memorable year for your child.  Consistent attendance is the first step for your child to have a positive experience at school. Every day matters for your child’s learning. In recent years we’ve seen too many students miss a day of school here and there. Missing school for students means missing assignments, time with friends, an important maths lesson or getting picked for a sports team. With days missed, years are lost.

Students are required to attend school every day, whether it’s the first or last day of the term, Mondays, Fridays or days dedicated to sports carnivals, school excursions and incursions.  Help us make sure your child is achieving their best and stays ahead in their learning with regular school attendance. The more time your child attends school, the greater their opportunity to learn, make new friends and improve their wellbeing. Together, let’s build positive attendance habits for a lifetime.

If your child is absent from school, please let us know why as soon as possible, even if it’s just a few minutes at the start or end of the school day. Of course, there will be times when your child is unable to be at school (like when they are unwell). Wherever possible, medical appointments should take place outside school hours and any family holidays should be taken in term breaks.

If your child is feeling anxious about coming to school and you need support, please reach out to your child’s teacher or me directly. Our staff are here to work with you and your child to help them attend school each and every day.  Thank you again for working with our staff to make sure your child is at school, on time, every day. We all want to see our students learn and grow.

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at our Acknowledgement Assembly or Meet the Teacher event on Tuesday, or perhaps at the Yarn Up next week.

STUDENT PROFILES - Lets get to know the students at MPS

Friday Fun Maths with 3B - They played a variety of maths games using addition, subtraction and place value

MPS Swimming Carnival 7/2/24 at Moruya Pool - In Week 2 we kick started our year of school sport with our annual Moruya Public School Swimming Carnival at Moruya Pool. It was an excellent day where the students showed off their skills in freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, and butterfly. The participation from students was high and many students engaged in more than one race. Swimming races were not the only way MPS students were involved at the carnival. Many students showed active participation in their own way in non-swimming water sport activities and cheering for their house teams. It was a busy day with some students having now participated in the District Swimming Carnival that was held on the 20th of February 2024.

District Swimming Carnival - This week MPS students followed up a successful school swimming carnival and attend the Eurobodalla PSSA District Swimming Carnival at Narooma. Our competitors all gave fantastic effort and supported each other both in and out of the pool. Everyone had success in completing their races and worked together in our four relay teams. We congratulate all students on their amazing efforts. MPS would also like to acknowledge Sebastian and Jessie H who both received multiple ribbons and could possibly progress to regional swimming. Great work everyone.

NRL Roads to Regions - Last week Stage 2 and 3 MPS students had a visit from the NRL and Canberra Raiders as part of their Roads to Regions program. The students listened as the presenters and current Canberra Raiders NRL players talked about ways that our students could be and give their best. The message that came across to our students was to try and give ‘Simply your Best’ in all areas of their lives at home and at school. The students also participated in spirited ball passing games in class teams and had opportunity to get autographs signed by the players. MPS students enjoyed the experience, and we welcome the opportunity for another visit from the NRL and Canberra Raiders in the future.

Kindergarten have some time with their year 6 buddies

Kitchen Garden - The year 6's were hard at work today, learning to make pasta from scratch. The students worked tremendously well together and produced a roasted pepper, onion and feta fettuccine in the first session and roasted pumpkin and pesto fettuccine in the second session.

OUR P&C

Aboriginal Education

walawaani njindiwan!

The Aboriginal Student Voice 2024 met for the first time this week. They discussed workshopping group rules and spent some time getting to know each other. I am looking forward to working with this group of students.

After a few false starts, our first Yarn-Up Afternoon Tea will be on Thursday 7 March 2024 and members of our Aboriginal Student Voice 2024 will also be attending. The Yarn-Up is for parents and families of our Aboriginal students to come together and is a great opportunity to find out what is happening at the school. An invitation will be sent home with students soon. Our aim is to have a Yarn-Up each term and it would be fantastic to see our community on a regular basis.

I will be in contact with parents of our Aboriginal students soon about PLPs (Personalised Learning Plans). Please don’t hesitate to let me know what works best for you in terms of contact with the school and your child’s teachers.

This year, we are considering starting a dhurga language (the local Aboriginal language) class for parents and community, on Wednesday afternoons at the school. If you or anyone you know is interested in learning dhurga, please contact me at the school to register your interest.
