From the Principal

Dear Jamberoo Public School Community,

Whole School Focus

The school has made the decision to assemble students on the basketball court at the beginning of the school day, after lunch and after recess. This provides the staff with the opportunity to discuss behavioural expectations with the students and to afford our students with positive messages around kindness, getting along with others, safe play etc.

It also provides students time to settle after a break, allowing them time to calm themselves and enter the classroom ready to engage in learning.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Next Wednesday 24th May, Jamberoo Public School students will be joined by the students of Jamberoo Preschool to participate in the National Simultaneous Storytime at 11am. Everyone will head to the hall with their lunch to listen to the book The Speedy Sloth written by Rebecca Young.

The occasion is a fantastic opportunity for the school to foster a sense of community and excitement around reading. It is the perfect way to have lots of Jamberoo pre-schoolers and school students excited about reading and learning. The preschool students will also stay on for lunch after the reading and engage in lunchtime activities.

District Cross Country

It was so exciting to hear that our amazing Jamberoo students participated so enthusiastically at last Thursday’s Tongarra Cross Country Carnival. From all reports the behaviour was outstanding, the effort of each student was incredible and all the Jamberoo runners wore their school badge with pride.

Some outstanding results achieved on the day were:

Reagan Dyos – (10 years boys) 4th

Maeve Rimmer – (9 years girls) 4th

India Binks – (11 years girls) 3rd

School Staffing

Throughout this year, Mrs Justine McCormack has stepped up in the role of Assistant Principal, on Thursdays and Fridays, and has done an incredible job leading the school and supporting our amazing students.

As of today, Mrs McCormack has made the decision to step down from the Relieving Assistant Principal role. We thank her for your dedication, professionalism and her ability to go the extra mile for the students, staff and the Jamberoo community. Moving forward, Mrs McCormack will continue in her role as classroom teacher on Walabi.

The school’s replacement for the role of Relieving Assistant Principal, two days a week, will be Mrs Samantha Galea. Mrs Galea will continue to be on class five days a week, however, she will be required to relieve as principal when required. We very much welcome Mrs Galea into the school’s executive team. Her years of experience and high levels of expertise and dedication make Mrs Galea an asset to the school’s leadership group.

PSSA Soccer

Last Friday, the school’s boys soccer team took on the might of Windang Public School in the PSSA Soccer Knockout at Kiama. According to all reports from the Super Coach, Miss Alpen, the boys played extremely well on the day and were an absolute pleasure to supervise because of their excellent behaviour, attitude and sportsmanship.

The cherry on the cake was the result. The boys were able to gain the ascendency early to defeat Windang Public School 9-1.

The boys should be very much congratulated for their efforts. We all look forward to hearing how they go in the next round of the PSSA Soccer Knockout.

Walk Safely to School Day

The annual Walk Safely to School Day will be held tomorrow. All children from Jamberoo Public School, along with their parents/carers, are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school on this day.

The Objectives of National Walk Safely to School Day are:

·      To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary age children.

·      To promote the health benefits of walking and create regular walking habits.

·      To help children develop vital road crossing skills.

·      To reduce car dependency and traffic congestion.

·      To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.

We would appreciate if as many Jamberoo families as possible could support this important cause next Friday.

Outside School Hours Care (OSHC)

The school is pleased to announce that Peak Sports and Learning has been selected to run the OSHC service at Jamberoo Public School. We expect that the provider will commence operations towards the second half of Term 2, 2023 depending on service approval.

Tell Them From Me (TTFM) Survey

Over the next few weeks, students in Years 4, 5 & 6 will participate in the Tell Them From Me Survey. The survey is designed by the Department of Education and is completed by thousands of students across the state. The data that is formulated by the survey is used to provide schools with vital information for future planning, strategic directions and to gain an insight into student learning and engagement.

Back to School Vouchers

The Premier's Back to School NSW program provides 3 x $50 vouchers, totalling $150 for each eligible student. Jamberoo Public School is now up and running accepting the vouchers, please contact the office if you have any questions.

• Vouchers are valid up until 30 June 2023.

• Each voucher can be used separately, or multiple vouchers can be used in the same purchase.

• Each voucher can only be redeemed once. If the transaction is less than the total value of the voucher, the remaining balance is forfeited and cannot be used in another transaction, e.g. if the transaction is $96.50 and two vouchers, totalling $100 are redeemed, the remaining $3.50 is forfeited. Schools will receipt one transaction of $50 redeeming one voucher and another transaction of $46.50 for the second voucher.

• No refunds can be claimed for products redeemed with a voucher.

• Voucher must be sighted either on your device or as a printed copy.

Reports

Teachers are in the process of analysing student assessment data in preparation to commence the writing of student reports. Reports will be sent home to families on the last day of school, Friday 30th June. There will be no three-way conferences this term, as they were conducted in Term One. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher about their progress, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher(s) to make an appointment.

Principal's Award

Well done to Lachlan O’Neill who last Friday was nominated for a Principal’s Award.  Lachlan demonstrated great leadership, team spirit and sportsmanship during last Wednesday’s PSSA cricket match against Mt Terry PS. Keep on leading by example Lachie!

Wombarra’s Wonderful Writers

The writing wizards from Wombarra have been at it again this week, impressing all with their ability to write correctly structured sentences.

Keep up the effort wizards!

Cross Country Champions – India Binks, Maeve Rimmer and Reagan Dyos.

Time Travellers

I had the pleasure this week to watch for myself the incredible learning the students of Wombarra exhibited around the concept of time. It was incredibly impressive to witness students being able to adjust analogue clocks to represent o’clock times. Well done, Wombarra students!

Art Club – Always fantastic to see the Art Club members being creative and enjoying themselves.

PSSA Boys Soccer Knockout

On Friday the 12th of May, the Jamberoo PS soccer team played in the first round of the PSSA soccer knockout competition. They played an amazing game full of sportsmanship, team spirit and of course, awesome soccer skills beating their opposition 9 – 1.

The team will be advancing to round 2 of the competition and are eagerly awaiting the next game date to be announced. Congratulations to the boys on a well-deserved win!

Music Night

I am excited to announce that we will be holding our annual Music Night this term! Music Night is an evening event in the school hall where students can sign up, individually or in groups, to perform for the audience. Examples include: singing, dancing, jokes, a short play or playing a musical instrument. Students can talk to me if they have a different idea, to get it approved. Performances should be limited to 3 minutes or the length of a song. Short plays may be slightly longer.

Any songs students are singing and dancing to will need to be primary school appropriate. Parents and carers, please check that the lyrics are OK. Also, dancing costumes and dance movements need to be age-appropriate to a primary school audience. Any backing tracks that your child is singing or dancing to will need to be emailed to Ms Alpen (see below) or sent in with your child on a USB and given directly to her.

The timeline for music night is as follows:

Weeks 2-6 – students can sign up for Music Night with me when they see me out on playground duty. I will have my clipboard with me to write your name down. Students may be in up to two performances if they would like. Please email Ms Alpen at maddison.alpen@det.nsw.edu.au with your music. You could download music from iTunes or Spotify if you have an account. Ms Alpen has also generously offered that if you email her a Youtube link she can convert it into a mp3 file for your child’s backing track. Alternatively, you can send in your child’s music using a USB. Please make sure your child hands it directly to her and that it has your child’s name on it.

Obviously, some students will not need music backing tracks, depending on their act.

Week 6 -Thursday 1st June. Your music is due to Ms Alpen by this date. Parents will then not need to bring music for their child on the night as it will already be organised.

Week 7 -- Thursday 8th June. We will have a closed rehearsal at lunch time in my classroom for all performers. Students will just do the first minute or so of their act on this day in front of me and the other performers. If students are not organised with their act on this day, I will advise them that we will save their performance for next year. In other words, students must be prepared for this closed rehearsal in order to participate in Music Night.

Week 8 -- Thursday 15th June. Music Night will be held at 6 pm in the school hall. All are welcome! It usually goes for about 2 hours. Students are asked to bring their best manners and be a respectful audience. They will be expected to remain in their seats and not leave the hall. Parents and carers should be in attendance to supervise them.

Looking forward to it!

Mrs McCormack
