Winston Hills Public School Newsletter

Issue 11 - 29 July 2025

From the Principal

Big Thank You

I would like to take this time to give a big thank you to the staff who have been involved or are about to be involved in camps. Last term, Year 5 had an amazing time at their three-day camp to Milson Island. In a couple of weeks, Year 6 will be off to Canberra and the Snowy Mountains for three days. These great experiences do not happen without hours of organisation and staff giving up their time to attend.

Band Camp

Over the weekend, we had 74 students involved in the school’s Band Camp at Galston. The camp started on Friday night and finished with an amazing showcase concert on the Sunday afternoon. I would like to give a very big thank you to our parent and teacher volunteers who gave up their weekend to support this program. Thank you:  Mr Shipway, Mrs Wong, Mrs Thapa, Mr Gray, Mrs D’Almeida, Mrs Huzij, Mrs Heng, Mrs Davis, Mr Wagner,  Mr Love, Mrs Wilkinson, Miss Russell, Ms Basladynski, Mrs Baines, Mrs Jefferies and Mrs Frame

I would like to give a big thank you to Mr Berkovitz, Mrs Odenthal and Miss Lee for all of their hard work to plan a great weekend.

Sad News

Over the holiday period, the school received some sad news about a former member of staff. Mrs Luther, who was a teacher at Winston Public School for a number of years, passed away. She was a dedicated teacher, who was always committed to providing the students of our school every opportunity to succeed and enjoy their learning. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

Public Education Week

Public Education Week is an annual celebration of NSW public education. On Wednesday 6th August, we will be holding our traditional Book Character Parade starting at 9:30am. At 11:30am to 12:30pm, we will be holding open classrooms for parents and grandparents to visit. There will be an art exhibition in the main hall from 11:30am to 2:00pm. Tea and coffee will be available for parents.

100 Days of Kindy Celebration

Today marked our 100 days of learning for our Kindergarten students. They were involved in a range of different activities in class to celebrate this milestone.

Construction Around The School

Over the past two months, we have had a ramp built behind the library block. This ramp will be open soon and will increase access to the playground for all of our students.

In the coming days, the Department of Education will start the construction of a security fence around the whole school. It is expected that this will take several weeks to complete and may impact movement in and out of the school during this time. Once it is completed, it will mean changes to how the school community access the school. Details will be shared once this project is completed.

Congratulations

I would also like to give a big congratulations to Hugo Seitz, Charlotte Arkins, Theodore Foggo, Lachlan Hough and Nate Appleyard who represented the Area at the State Cross Country Championships last Wednesday. We are very proud of their achievements.

Attendance

Each day, the school sends out a SMS notification for students who are away. If you have more than one child away on the day, please include all of their names in the response that you send back to the school. If your child is at home sick, please state that in the SMS response. A response of, “my child is home” does not indicate the reason why.

For students who arrive at school late without a parent providing a reason, an SMS will also be sent.

It is an audit requirement that the school monitors and sends notifications out to parents when a reason has not been provided.

Hills Performing Arts Festival

Our school will be performing at the Hills Performing Arts Festival on Thursday 28th August. The tickets will go on sale on Tuesday 5th August from 10am. Please be aware that it will be “first in best dressed” and in the past they have sold out very quickly and as a result, there is a limit of two tickets per transaction.

Staff Development Day

The staff development day that was held on Monday 21st July, saw staff complete their annual CPR training. This is an important component of ensuring our community is safe.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2026

Most of the enrolment process can be completed by visiting https://winstonhil-p.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/enrolment.html

Library News - Education Week

Book Fair

This year’s Book Fair is scheduled for Friday 1 August to Wednesday 6 August, during Week 2 and Week 3 this term.

The Book Fair is a wonderful opportunity to find books that will encourage students to read for pleasure. This is a lively and fun-filled event that enables students, parents and teachers to purchase high-quality books at reasonable prices, while helping to earn free books for our school.

There will be a variety of affordable books and stationery with prices ranging from $10 and up.

Parents can visit the Book Fair from 8:30 – 9:00 am and 3:00 - 3:30 pm during the week or after the Book Parade on Wednesday 6 August.

All classes from K-6 will have an opportunity to buy books during their library time or during lunchtime.

If you are unable to attend the Book Fair, you can choose the pre-payment option to purchase books.

https://parentpayments.scholastic.com.au/form

Once you have completed the payment, please email us with your receipt (winstonhil-p.school@det.nsw.edu.au), or send it to us with your child. We will then make sure that your child receives the respective books to take home.

Open Classrooms

Parents can visit the classrooms during the middle session (11:30 to 12:30).

Art Exhibition

During open day, a number of student artworks will be displayed in an art exhibition in the school hall. This will include displays featuring the work from our high potential and gifted education sessions, as well as many other impressive artworks made in classes this year across K-6.

Book Parade

On Wednesday 6 August (Week 3) we are hosting the Book Parade. All students from K-6 are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character on the day.

The book parade will be held in the morning, starting at 9:30am in area A.  Each class will parade with their class teacher.

Please talk with your child about how they would like to participate in the Book Parade and help with their costumes as needed. Save the date and get those costumes ready!

Date:             Wednesday 6 August (week 3)

Time:             9:30am

Location:       Area A

From the Chaplain

Dear School Community,

Welcome back to what promises to be another great start to Term 3.  As we journey through this term together, I continue to be inspired by the kindness, resilience, and spirit of our students and staff.  It is truly a joy to see our community grow not just in knowledge, but in compassion and care for one another.

This week, I would like to encourage us all to focus on the theme of hope—to look for the light in every situation and to be that light for others. Whether in the classroom or at home, we each have the opportunity to make a difference by guiding our children and ourselves to reflect deeply and support one another in meaningful and positive ways.

As always, my door is open to anyone in need of a listening ear, emotional, mental or spiritual support, or simply a quiet space to reflect. Let us continue to walk together in kindness, love and hope as we support one another this term.

Warmest regards,

Dawn Tan

School Chaplain

Debating 2025

The Winston Hills Public School debating team had their third debate of the season last week, competing against Winston Heights Public School. The topic was, "That parents should make their kids try as many sports as possible instead of focusing on just one or two".

After losing the coin toss, our team took the negative position. First speaker Charlotte, second speaker Arunika, third speaker Victoria, and fourth speaker Emilie performed exceptionally well however, were unsuccessful despite their best efforts.
We look forward to our final debate tomorrow against Matthew Pearce Public School.
Good luck, debaters!
Kind regards,
Shellea Lorenz

CLASS OF THE WEEK - 4R

COMMUNITY NEWS

Model Farms High School Trivia Night

It's time once again for the City of Parramatta's annual Truck Art Competition! We are inviting all student artists to create a masterpiece that incorporates the new FOGO bin service.

What is the challenge? This year’s challenge is about educating people about the correct way to sort your waste with the new FOGO service. When the incorrect things are placed into the FOGO bin it contaminates and ruins all the pure organics making it a longer and harder process to create compost, fertiliser etc as they will need to be physically removed from the FOGO bins.

The purpose of sorting your FOGO waste correctly is firstly to repurpose our food and garden waste and secondly to eliminate food waste being sent to landfill as we are running out of space!

Students are asked to apply their creativity and artistic skill and colour in the provided artwork in a visually stunning way or design their own masterpiece on the provided A4 paper which brings the community’s attention to sort their FOGO waste correctly with the slogan “Anything you can Eat or Grow, Feed it to FOGO!”.

There are some great prizes up for grabs! The overall winning students' art work will be SUPERSIZED and featured on the side of a FOGO collection truck, other winning prizes include gift cards, family movie passes and the overall winning students' school can choose from a sports or environmental pack!

So it's time to get creative or get colouring! See attached Terms and conditions for further information.
