Principal's Updates

Student Attendance Celebration

On Friday in week 4, I was invited to meet with Jason Miezis the Relieving Executive Director – Metropolitan North, Daniel Hurd Director of Educational Leadership - Carlingford Network and five other primary and high schools, to discuss our extremely impressive and positive student attendance rates at Rydalmere Public School and Preschool. Student attendance data indicates that in comparison to the same time last year, we have an increase of 2.7% overall, and for students attending 90% or more of the time an increase of 15.3%. That is a fabulous achievement in twelve months. In the meeting I attributed this success to the wonderful opportunities that are being created for our students where they are challenged, excited and inspired in the classroom.  Along with a range of student voice initiatives such as SRC, sport monitors, PBL student leaders, coding club, and the upgrading of the school’s physical environments in the classroom and on the playground. All of these factors have led to building a sense of belonging and engagement for all of our students.

Thank you to our wonderful staff, parents and wider school community for supporting and embracing the positive changes that have taken place here at Rydalmere Public School and Preschool over the last year and a half. It is fabulous to know that our students love coming to school everyday.

Reconciliation Week

Last week, our school celebrated Reconciliation Week alongside National Sorry Day, with a variety of activities aimed at promoting understanding and respect between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.  Together, we reflected on our journey towards a more inclusive community. Thank you to Mrs Arnott for leading these activities during library time.

Student Leadership Day

On Tuesday our school prefects attended a student leadership day at Cumberland High School. Student leaders from 19 primary schools in the Carlingford Network of schools participated.

The day, led by senior student leaders from Cumberland High School provided an opportunity for student leaders across the network to connect and further enhance their leadership skills through collaborative challenges.

Thank you to Cumberland High School for hosting the day and their student leaders for running the activities.

Zone Cross Country

Yesterday the RPS Cross Country team took part in the Zone Cross Country competition, where they competed against 20 other schools. Despite the wet and cold weather, our runners showed great effort and determination as they raced in their events. They worked well as a team and displayed strong sportsmanship throughout the event. Many students achieved personal bests, and a big congratulations to Kenzo who has qualified for the Sydney West Cross Country.

Our students looked very impressive as they were wearing our new 'RPS Representative' singlets which from now on be worn by students when they attend Zone Cross Country and Athletics carnivals.

Well done to all our runners and good luck Kenzo at the regional carnival.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

Regards,

Warren Yee

K-2 Assistant Principal Updates

K-2 Home Readers

Thank you to our P&C for their generous $5,000 donation. We also raised approximately $1,200 from the disco and lolly bags. In addition, we were fortunate to receive a grant from the Department of Education to help purchase new home readers.

We now have hundreds of home readers to cover and are seeking parent volunteers to help with this process. We will be holding a brief home reader wrapping induction for any interested parent volunteers next Thursday from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

3-6 Assistant Principal Updates

Year 6 Fundraising Update

We are excited to share that Year 6 has successfully raised $460 through our recent cake stall! Thank you to everyone who contributed to this effort.

To build on this success, we are pleased to announce an upcoming Hot Chocolate Fundraiser! Students will be selling delicious hot chocolates on Thursday mornings for the rest of this term for just $1. If they want marshmallows and whipped cream it will be $3! This is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy a warm treat while supporting our Year 6 initiatives.

All money raised will go towards our legacy gift and end-of-year events, helping us create memorable experiences for our students.

Thank you for your continued support!

Years 3-6 Multicultural Public Speaking Competition

This term, students from Years 3 to 6 have been taking part in the Multicultural Public Speaking Competition, and we are excited to share what they have been learning. Through their class presentations, students have explored important topics like culture, identity, inclusion, and diversity, helping them understand these ideas better.

While preparing their speeches, students worked on creating content that was meaningful and interesting. They learned how to organise their thoughts clearly, with a strong introduction, main points, and a conclusion. Many students showed great confidence and skill when delivering their speeches in front of their classmates.

In addition, students have been learning about persuasive writing, which has helped them create strong arguments for their speeches. This has allowed them to express their ideas clearly and make their presentations engaging.

We are proud of all the students for their efforts and dedication. We look forward to seeing those who have advanced to the next round present their speeches in front of their peers next week, showcasing the diverse backgrounds and unique perspectives they bring to our school community.

5/6T’s Journey into Town Planning

This term, 5/6T has been engaged in an exciting unit on town planning as part of their geography studies in the library. Students are exploring how towns are organised and managed through four key zones: residential, commercial, green or recreational, and industrial.

In their lessons, students have been learning about residential zones, where people live, and how the layout of houses and apartments affects community life. They are discovering the characteristics of commercial zones, which include shops and businesses, and how these areas serve the needs of the community.

The class is also examining green or recreational zones, such as parks and sports fields, recognising their importance for leisure and well-being. Finally, they are looking into industrial zones, where manufacturing takes place, and discussing their impact on the economy and environment.

5/6T is gaining a deeper understanding of how these zones interact to create functional and vibrant communities.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)

We're excited to share some of the new initiatives happening across our school as part of our PBL (Positive Behaviour for Learning) journey!

PBL Leaders:

We’ve introduced PBL Leaders to help model and reinforce our school values of being safe, respectful learners. Each week, they support the focus of our PBL lessons by promoting positive behaviour across the school. Our PBL Leaders are out in the playground during recess and lunch, handing out sport wrens and fast and frequent tokens.

Congratulations to our newly appointed PBL Leaders! These students are setting a fantastic example by promoting safe, respectful and responsible behaviours on the playground.

Sport Wrens

This term, we’ve also introduced sport wrens to encourage and reward sportsmanship across a range of school activities. Students can earn a sport wren during school sport, zing, PSSA and while playing on the playground by demonstrating fairness, encouragement, teamwork and respect.

Each sport wren is coloured to match the student’s house team – Blaxland, Macarthur and Schaeffer.  Sport wrens are placed in the corresponding sport wren box located near the school noticeboard.

When a house reaches 500 Sport Wrens, they’ll be rewarded with a mufti day to celebrate their positive sportsmanship and team spirit!

P&C Report

We hope that you are staying warm in these cold days.

We want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to our fundraising efforts so far this year. We are delighted to say that your help, we have met our first goal and have given the school a $5,000 contribution to go towards the purchase of K-2 decodable home readers.

Every contribution—large or small—has helped us put more stories and knowledge into the hands of our littlest learners. Thank you for being a part of this meaningful fundraising effort!

The School has advised that the books have been ordered and our K-2 readers will have access to these valuable resources as soon as possible.

Community Hub News

I hope you're having a great week!

I just got back from a fantastic network conference in Melbourne, hosted by Community Hubs Australia. Hub leaders from all around the country came together to share ideas, swap stories, and inspire each other. I left with a bunch of fresh ideas that I can’t wait to tell you about—and I’d love to hear your thoughts on whether you’d like to see some of these new programs at our Hub.

A lot of parents have asked for this, so we’re putting together an information session about the NDIS (National Disability Insurance Scheme) on June 10th. If you have questions about whether your child might be eligible for support, or if you’re struggling to figure out how the system works, this is your chance. Come meet the experts, bring your questions, and feel free to invite friends—everyone’s welcome. We’ll have a relaxed atmosphere and some light morning tea to share.

Hub will be partnering with MobilEYES to provide free eye check up for our school students and families. This check up will be in term 3, week 6 (25th August to 30th August). Please follow this space for more information on how to register.

Our playgroup is going on a picnic on June 11th! If you’ve got little ones under 5, join us for our regular playgroup on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11:30 am. It’s a great way for kids (and parents!) to make friends and have fun together.

If you joined the swimming program at Parramatta Aquatic Centre this term, we’d love your feedback—especially about how accessible it was for you and your family. Also, if you have kids aged 3–5, would you be interested in a free story and craft session? Let me know what you think—your input helps us create programs that truly work for you.

If we haven’t met yet, I’m Seetha, your Community Liaison Officer here at the Hub. You’ll find me around school Mondays to Wednesdays and on Fridays. The Hub is here to help you connect with other families, the school, and local services. It’s a space where everyone’s welcome, and there’s always something going on—whether it’s a regular group or a special event. Drop by for a coffee and chat, or jump into one of our activities. I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Want to know more about the Hub, or get involved? Just call me on 0448331588 or email seetha.srinivasan@det.nsw.edu.au.
